SCOOBA - The Co-Lin Wolfpack split their season opener with the East Mississippi Lions taking game one 6-3 in 8 innings and dropping the nightcap 8-7 on a cold, windy day in Scooba. The Wolfpack travel to Baton Rouge on Tuesday for a doubleheader beginning at 2 p.m.
Co-Lin 6, East MS 3
The Wolfpack to a 1-0 lead in the first inning. Catcher Stephen Joe drew a lead-off walk, stole second and advanced to third on Lion error. Joe scored on a single to left field by shortstop Noel Santos.
The Lions took a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the second inning. Trent Waddell singled to second and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Alex Chick doubled scoring Waddell. Holden Watts hit an RBI single to left single scoring Chick.
In the top of the third, Gabe Wilson doubled to left field. He stole third and home to tie the game at 2-all.
East Mississippi added another run in the bottom of the third. Aaron Brandt reached base on an error and scored on a double by Austin Braddock.
Co-Lin tied the game in the top of the seventh. Right fielder Zac Ferguson reached on an error, advanced to third on another Lion error, and scored the tying run on a wild pitch.
In the top of the eighth inning, Wilson singled and advanced to third on Santos's single. Wilson scored on Mitch Little's single. Willie Buckles sacrifice advanced Santos and Little to second and third. Left fielder Bryce Guess was intentionally walked to load the bases with one out. Ferguson's grounder to second scored Santos from third. Matt Smith singled to plate Little giving the Wolfpack a 6-3 lead.
Pitcher Andrew Lee pitched 2 scoreless innings to pick up the win. Starter Tripp Jolly allowed 3 runs on 5 hits, walked 1 and struck out 2 in 3 innings of work. Tyler Copeland relieved Jolly in the fourth inning. Copeland allowed 1 hit and struck out 4 in 3 innings.
Absorbing the loss was Blake Roberts. Roberts allowed 4 runs on 4 hits, walked 2 and struck out none in 3 innings of work. Starter Blake Hutcheson allowed 2 runs and 2 hits, walked 3 and struck out 1 in 5 innings.
At the plate, Wilson led the way with a double and a single. Santos singled twice. Smith and Little singled.
For East Mississippi, Braddock and Chick had a double apiece. Singling were Tyler Bonaventure, Zane Migues, Waddell, and Watts.
East MS 8, Co-Lin 7
The Lions exploded for 7 runs sending 12 men to the plate in the bottom of the second inning.
Co-Lin plated 3 runs in the top of the third inning. Will Gatlin drew a lead off walk and advanced to third on Wilson's single to left field. Little drew a walk to load the bases with 2 outs. Guess drew a 4-pitch walk to score Gatlin. Matt Smith hit a hard grounder to short that was bobbled by the shortstop scoring Wilson. Little scored on a passed ball and the Wolfpack trailed 6-3.
Gatlin doubled to right field to lead off the fourth inning. He advanced to third on a passed ball. Nolan Long reached on an error and Gatlin scored. Buckley hit an RBI single to right field scoring Long bringing to Wolfpack to within 2, at 7-5.
East Mississippi picked up a run in the bottom of the fourth to increase their lead to 8-5.
In the top of the sixth, lead off hitter Jarvis Wilbert was hit by a pitch. Gatlin reached first on an error. With runners on first and second and no outs, Buckley reach on an error, Wilbert scored and advanced to third. East MS held on to a 8-6 lead going into the top of the 7th inning.
In the seventh, Matt Smith and Johnathan Santanna had back-to-back singles. Both runners advanced to second and third on a passed ball. Wilbert reached first on a dropped third strike loading the bases with 1 out. Gatlin reached on a fielder's choice that scored Smith pulling Co-Lin to 8-7, but Wolfpack couldn't get the tying run across the plate.
At the plate for the Wolfpack, Gatlin doubled. Buckley, Wilson, Matt Smith and Santanna had a single apiece.
Starter Raymond Winter gave up 6 runs on 4 hits, walked 1 in 1.1 innings. Chandler Ramsey relieved Winter in the second inning. He allowed 1 run and walked 2 in 1.2 innings. Cody Smith pitched the remaining the final 3 innings allowing 1 run on 2 hits and walked 2.
East Mississippi was led by Chick with 2 singles ahd 3 RBIs. Wilson doubled. Adding a single apiece were Jason Yarbor, Waddell, Spencer Wilson and Ismeal Reyes.
