BATON ROUGE – The Wolfpack scored 27 runs and pounded out 26 hits to sweep a doubleheader from the Baton Rouge Community College Bears. Co-Lin (3-1) rallied to take a 13-12 win in 9 innings in the opener and a 14-9 win in the nightcap. The Wolfpack will host Mississippi Delta for a doubleheader in their home opener on Friday at Sullivan Field. The Wolfpack scored 5 runs in the top of the eighth inning to break an 8-all tie. Nolan Long reached on an error. Steven Joe followed with a single to right field. Shortstop Noel Santos singled scoring Long from second. Mitch Little drew a walk to load the bases. Freshman Gabe Wilson doubled to center scoring Joe. Santos then scored on a wild pitch. Wilson scored on a double to left field by third baseman Matt Smith. With 1 out, Little scored on a grounder to first base by Willie Buckley.
Baton Rouge scored three runs in the bottom of the ninth to cut its deficit to one. An RBI double by Christian McMorris, an RBI single by Cade LeBlanc, and a sacrifice fly by David Hofstetter brought the Bears to within 13-12. But Baton Rouge's Matthew Willis grounded out to end the ballgame.
Co-Lin jumped out to an early lead, 2-0. A double by Wilson, plating Joe and Santos started the inning off.
Wilson led the Wolfpack’s hitting attack with 2 doubles and a single for 3 RBIs. Joe added 3 singles. Matt Smith doubled twice and had 2 RBIs. Long tripled. Santos, Bryce Guess, Zac Ferguson, and Jarvis Wilbert singled.
The Bears pounded out 17 hits in the game led by Jacob Williams with a double and 2 singles. Tanner Sheets had 3 singles. Rachal had a double and a single. McMorris and T.J. Trantham doubled. LeBlanc and Grant Authement singled twice. Singling were Hofstetter, Tyler Lane, and Andre Landry.
Tyler Copeland recorded the win striking out 1, walking 1, allowing 4 runs on 5 hits in 2.1 innings of work. Andrew Lee picked up the save allowing 1 hit and walking 1 in .2 innings. Starter Javon Washington pitched 4 innings allowing 7 runs on 9 hits, striking out 2 and walking 3. Corey Pouncey relieved Washington in the fifth inning. He allowed 1 run on 2 hits, walked 3 and struck out 1.
Cole Vanderlick absorbed the loss allowing 1 run on 2 hits, walking 2 and striking out 1 in 2 innings of work. Starter Steven O’Bryant pitched 5 innings allowing 5 runs on 4 hits, striking out 3 and walking 1. Also seeing action were Jacob Gentry and Wesley Tanner.
The Wolfpack scored exploded for 6 runs in the top of the sixth inning to take a 13-5 lead. Matt Smith reached first base on an error. Will Gatlin drew a walk with 1 out. Ferguson reached on a fielder’s choice. Johnathan Santana hit an RBI double to left field. Ferguson scored on an error. Washington walked and stole second. Santana scored on an error. Long’s RBI single to the shortstop scored Washington. Long stole second, advanced to third on balk, and scored on a grounder by Joe that was bobbled by the third baseman. Back-to-back singles by Wilson and Matt Smith loaded the bases. Santos drew a walk scoring Joe.
Baton Rouge tried to rally again in the bottom of the seventh inning trailing 14-5. Robert Parker Jr. singled to center and advanced to second on a wild pitch. A single by McMorris and an error allowed Parker to score. Bond Babin’s RBI single to center scored McMorris. A pitch hit the next batter, Matthew Willis. Authement reached on a fielder’s choice to left field. Rachal’s RBI single scored Willis and the Bears trailed 14-8. A wild pitch advanced runners to second and third. Hofstetter’s RBI single to right field scored Authement. Parker struck out to end the game and the rally.
At the plate, Santana led the 13-hit Co-Lin attack with a double and 2 singles. Long had 3 singles. Matt Smith (3RBIs) and Wilson had a double and single apiece. Also hitting safely were Garrett McBeth, Ferguson and Joe.
McMorris led the Bears with a home run and 2 singles for 3 RBIs. Babin and Jesse Buratt singled twice. Adding a single apiece were Rachal, LeBlanc, Blake Hymel, Bryce Sibille, Parker and Hofstetter.
Raymond Winter picked up the win allowing 2 runs on 2 hits, striking out 5 and walking 1 in 3.2 innings. Starter Josh Wages pitched 2.1 innings allowing 3 runs on 6 hits, striking out 1 and walking 2. Tyler Case relieved Winter in the seventh allowing 4 runs on 5 hits. Joe relieved Case striking out the last batter.
Absorbing the loss was James Little. He allowed 3 runs on 3 hits, struck out 2 and walked 2 in 2 innings of work. Starter Eugene Genevay pitched 1.2 innings allowing 3 runs on 3 hits, striking out 2 and walking 2. Also seeing action on the mound were James Fontenot, Stephen Pennick and Kody Smith.
