WESSON - Freshman catcher Karla Beth Hux hit the game-winning single up the middle in the bottom of the seventh inning to give the Co-Lin Lady Wolves a 4-3 win over No. 6 ranked Heartland (IL). The Lady Hawks took the nightcap 10-1. Co-Lin (1-1) will host the Holmes Lady Bulldogs for a doubleheader on Wednesday, Feb. 8, at 2 p.m.
Lady Wolves 4, Heartland 3
With the score tied at 3-all going into the bottom of the seventh inning, lead-off batter Stevie Ann Wright singled to left field. Wright moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by shortstop Josie Porter. Hux smashed a single up the middle scoring Wright.
The Lady Wolves took a 1-0 lead in the third inning when third baseman Kacy Smith's solo home run to left center.
Heartland took a 3-1 lead in the top fifth inning.
Co-Lin scratched a run in the bottom of the fifth to pull to 3-2. Smith was hit by a pitch, advanced to second on a passed ball, and stole third. Josie Porter hit a bloop single to score Smith.
The Lady Wolves tied the game at 3-all in the bottom of the sixth, Hux reached on an error and advanced to second on a sacrifice by second baseman Tammy Alford. Smith hit an RBI single scoring Hux.
Sarah Anthony picked up the win for the Lady Wolves striking out 4, walking 2 and allowing 9 hits in 7 innings of work. Beth Wilson absorbed the loss for the Hawks. She struck out 9, walked 2 and allowed 5 hits.
Smith led the Lady Wolves at the play with a home run and a single (2RBIs). Porter, Hux and Wright had a single apiece.
For the Hawks, Stevens had a triple and a single. Danielle Burge was 3-for-3 with 3 singles. Singling were Katie Mayes, Lindsay Williams, Kelsey Lowry, and Talia Verardo.
Heartland 10, Co-Lin 1
Heartland pounded out 14 hits in the 5 inning contest. Burge led the hit parade with 2 2-run home runs and a double for 5 RBIs in the game.
The Lady Hawks took a 1-0 lead in the first on Christina Beam's RBI single.
Co-Lin would tie the game at 1-all in the bottom of the second inning.
Heartland with add 2 runs in the third on Burges first 2-run home run over the left center field wall. They plated 3 more runs runs in the fourth, and 4 runs in the fifth.
Susan Goetze limited Co-Lin to 4 hits in the game. She struck out 5, walked 2, hit 1 batter in 5 innings. Absorbing the loss for the Lady Wolves was Brooke Delaughter. She struck out 3, walked 1, and allowed 6 runs on 10 hits. Chynna Coghlan relieved Delaughter with 2 outs in the fourth inning. She allowed 4 runs on 4 hits and walked 1.
