Co-Lin sweeps Holmes

WESSON - The Co-Lin Lady Wolves swept a non-division doubleheader from the Holmes Lady Bulldogs 10-1 and 10-5. The Lady Wolves improve to 3-1 on the season and travel to Lorman to take on the Alcorn Lady Braves on Wednesday, Feb. 15. First pitch of the doubleheader is at 1 p.m.

The Lady Wolves jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning as Emily Smith and Karla Beth Hux hit back-to-back doubles with one out. Designated player Tammy Alford smashed a 2 RBI double to left center to score Smith and Hux.

Co-Lin exploded for six runs in the second inning to take a 8-1 lead. Ashley McCaffery, Bradi Davis, and Josie Porter hit 3 singles in a row. Smith then roped a triple to the left field corner to score McCaffery and Davis. First baseman Shelby Mitchell drilled a 2-run single to cap a 6 run second inning

In the third inning, sophomore Bobbie Cochran walked followed by a Emily Smith.

Sarah Anthony (2-0) picked up the win allowing 1 run on 2 hits, struck out 3 and walked 1 in 3 innings. Freshman Chynna Coghlan pitched the final 2 innings allowing no runs on 3 hits, walked none and struck out none.

Absorbing the loss was Kelsey Marter. She allowed 8 runs on 7 hits strick out 1 and walked none in 1.1 innings. Allison Ray pitched the final 2.2 innings allowing 2 runs on 3 hits, walking 1 and striking out 1.

Smith, a sophomore outfielder from Brookhaven, went 3-for-3 with a triple and 2 singles to lead the Lady Wolves. Hux followed with a double and a single. Alford doubled. Adding a single apiece were Josie Porter, Shelby, Ashley McCaffery, and Davis.

For the Lady Bulldogs, Kaitlyn Hicks led the way with a double and single. Lauren Tharp singled twice and Jonissa Buchannan singled.

"We played solid defense and got good pitching, while only leaving 3 runners stranded in our 4 innings at the plate," said Co-Lin head coach Allen Kent. "Sarah did a good job and Chynna was able to give us 2 quality innings."

Josie Porter led off the game with a single, stole 2 bases and scored on a passed ball to give the Lady Wolves a 1-0 lead after 1 inning.

The Lady Wolves plated another run in the second on Kacey Smith's solo shot over the left center field wall.

Holmes would take a 3-2 lead in the top of the third as the Lady Wolves would commit 3 errors.

Co-Lin would respond with 4 runs in the bottom of the third as Porter walked and stole second. Kaitlan Moak slapped an infield single and stole second.  Hux drew a walk followed by a 2-run single by Mitchell. Alford reached base on a fielders choice bunt and Smith drew a bases loaded walk.  Leah Britt slapped a single off the pitcher’s glove to drive in Mitchell and give Co-Lin a 6-3 lead.

Delaughter walked 2 to lead off the fourth inning. A wild pitch and 2 passed balls allowed a run to score, trimming the lead to 6-4.  Sarah Anthony came on in relief with a runner at third and no out.  Anthony induced a popup to the catcher and struck out Holmes’ 3 and 4 hitters to end the threat.

Ginny Mills was the losing pitcher. She allowed 6 runs on 4 hits, walked 4 and struck out two in 4 innings of work. Alecia McDaniel relieved Mills in the fifth inning allowing 4 runs on 4 hits, striking out 4, and issuing 1 walk.

Co-Lin padded their lead in the as Porter dropped a bunt single and stole second. Kaitlin Moak slapped a single to center. Hux smashed a deep homerun to right center for a 9-4 lead.  Second baseman Bradi Davis drew a walk and Smith doubled to right.  Moak would score when Carrie Moak reached on an error.

Holmes scored an unearned run in the seventh.

Winning pitcher Brooke Delaughter (1-1) allowed 3 runs on 2 hits striking out 6 and walking 4 in 3 innings of work. Anthony came on in the fourth inning collected the save allowing no hits, striking out four and issued one walk.

"We kicked it around on defense, committing 5 errors," said Kent. "We also had 3 passed balls and 2 wild pitches.  None of Holmes’ 5 runs were earned.  "We must play better defensively.  Luckily our hitting bailed us out," Kent added.

At the plate, Mitchell had 3 singles (2RBIs). Porter had 2 singles, 3 stolen bases, a walk and 3 runs scored. Kaitlan Moak had 2 singles, a stolen base and 2 runs scored. Hux homered and walked twice.

"Sarah did a great job in relief, totally shutting down the Lady Bulldogs," said Kent. "Brooke is still experiencing some effects of elbow surgery last summer. She had 6 strikeouts in 3 innings, but also walked 5. Our defense didn’t help her much either. Brooke is a warrior and is battling to be out there and help us as much as she can."
