MERIDIAN - The Lady Wolves went 1-1 at the MCC/Rush Softball  Tournament on Friday. Co-Lin fell to NJCAA Division I Shelton State (AL) 4-3 and defeated L. B. Wallace 9-3 in their second game of the day. Saturday’s games were canceled due to weather. The Lady Wolves (5-3) host Bossier Parrish (LA) on Monday. Action begins at 12 p.m. at Lady Wolves Field.

Shelton State (AL) 4, Co-Lin 3

Shelton State squeaked out a 4-3 win in game 1. After three scoreless innings, Shelton took a 1-0 lead in the fourth inning. The Lady Wolves  responded in the bottom of the inning with a run as second baseman Tammy Alford drew a lead-off walk. Center fielder Ashley McCaffery reached safely on a push bunt.  Lacy Duplantis reached on an infield single to load the bases.  Josie Porter’s groundout scored Alford to tie the game at 1-all.

Shelton State scratched an unearned run in the fifth inning and 2 more in the seventh inning to push their lead to 4-1.

In the bottom of the seventh inning, Karla Beth Hux drew a lead-off walk and designated player Shelby Mitchell smashed a home run to right field trimming the deficit to 4-3.

Chynna Coghlan was charged with the loss, giving up 2 earned runs on five hits striking out 2 and walking none in 3 innings. Starter Sarah Anthony pitched 4 innings, allowing 1 earned run on 4 hits, striking out 3 and walking none.

At the plate, Mitchell homered and singled. Emily Smith singled twice. Porter singled.

"We left 10 runners stranded, so we had plenty of opportunities to win this one," said head coach Allen Kent. "Chynna didn’t deserve to lose this one. We had a bad bounce error and a mental error on a bunt coverage."

According to Kent, "no call" cost the Lady Wolves 2 runs in the 7th inning. Second baseman Bradi Davis went to field a 2-out ground ball and the runner on first base ran into her. Neither umpire made an interference call and 2 runs scored. "It was a horrible non-call that ended up costing us the game," said Kent.

Co-Lin 9, L.B. Wallace 3

The Lady Wolves broke open the scoreless game with a 3-run third inning. Bobbie Cochran drew a leadoff walk and Josie Porter dropped down a bunt single. Kaitlan Moak drilled a 2-run double off the left-center fence. Shelby Mitchell smoked an RBI single down the right field line.

Co-Lin added 3 more runs in the fifth inning to take a 6-0 lead. Moak drew a lead-off walk and Karla Beth Hux singled. Kacey Smith ripped a 2-run double and Tammy Alford walked and later scored on a passed ball.

L.B. Wallace plated a run in the fifth inning.

The Lady Wolves scored again in the sixth inning. Porter’s dribbler to the infield was thrown away at first and advanced to second on the throw and took third as the third baseman was late getting back to the bag.  The throw to third was wild and Porter scampered home for a little league home run.

In the seventh inning, Alford and Emily Smith singled and Bradi Davis sacrificed them over. Ashley McCaffery drilled a 2-run double to left center to extend the Co-Lin lead to 9-1.

L.B. Wallace scored 2 runs in the seventh inning off reliever Kacey Smith, aided by a single and an error.

Sarah Anthony (4-0) was credited with the win, tossing 4 scoreless innings. She allowed 2 hits, struck out 2 and walked 2. Chynna Coghlan threw 2 innings, giving up 3 hits, 1 earned run and no walks. Kacey Smith tossed the final frame, giving up 4 singles.

Smith also lead the Lady Wolves hitting attack with 3 hits.

"Our pitchers did a pretty good job today," said Kent. "Sarah went 8 innings, only allowing 1 run. Chynna was able to give us 5 quality innings.  We need to tighten up in some areas on defense and communicate a little better. Overall, we played pretty well against 2 division 1 Alabama JUCOs."
