Lady Wolves ink seven for 2010-2011

WESSON - The first week of the signing period was a good one for the Copiah-Lincoln Lady Wolves basketball team. The Lady Wolves, coming off of a 31-2 season and a seventh place finish in the national tournament, signed seven outstanding in-state recruits to give their 2010 class a great start.

Mendenhall product Tiffany Sims was the first recruit to sign on the dotted line last week. Sims, a 5-6 guard, averaged 13.9 points per game for Coach Marilyn Coleman and the Lady Tigers. An All-District performer her junior year, Sims led Mendenhall to the state tournament quarterfinals where they lost to Itawamba AHS in the Coliseum.

“Tiffany is a very quick and athletic player who should really be able to give a lot of people trouble on the defensive end,” said Lady Wolves head coach Gwyn Young.

Franklin County post player CeCe Miller was the next recruit to make her decision final. Miller, a 5-11 forward, averaged 13.9 points and 9.2 rebounds for Coach Charles Moore and the Lady Bulldogs. Franklin County finished their season with a 23-5 record after falling in the state semi-finals to Belmont. Miller was selected All-district, All-Metro by The Natchez Democrat, and All-Area by The Daily Leader.

“We are always pleased to get another player from Coach Moore and Franklin County,” said Young. “CeCe is very skilled with the ball and has a great shooting touch.” Miller is the third Lady Bulldog post player to sign with the Lady Wolves in three years. She will replace graduating sophomore and former Franklin County star Shareka Hunt and join former teammate Paige Webster on next season’s team.

Three Natchez Lady Bulldogs have joined the 2010 signing class. Jasmine Belton, Keosha Bradley, and Anastasia Hutchins were a huge part of the recent success for Coach Sue Johnson and her Natchez Lady Bulldogs. Belton, a 5-9 forward averaged 9.4 points for the season and was awarded best rebounder at the team banquet. Bradley, a 5-7 guard averaged 14.7 points and was selected All-District, All-State, All-Metro by The Natchez Democrat, and selected at the team most valuable player. Bradley was also selected to play in the Rising Senior All-Star Game at Mississippi College, the Mississippi/Alabama All-Star Game, and picked for the Dandy Dozen by The Clarion Ledger. Hutchins, a 5-6 guard, averaged 11.8 points and was selected best offensive and defensive player.

All three were instrumental in the outstanding season Natchez High had during their junior year where they finished 22-10 and fell to Murrah in the state quarterfinals.

“We are very excited about getting three quality young ladies from Natchez High,” said Young. “We’ve seen these girls grow and get better every year at our team camp and we expect great things from them next season.”

Vicksburg High School’s Missy Gator Alexus Stirgus joins the 2010-2011 signing class. Stirgus, a 5-7 guard, was the floor general for Coach Barbara Hartzog and her Vicksburg High team. An All-District and three time All-County selection, Sturgis averaged 13.1 points, 3.2 rebounds, 1.9 assists, and 1.6 steals per game.

“Alexus had a great visit and she’s excited about coming to Co-Lin and we’re just as excited about getting her. She’s a very smart player who knows how to get the ball to her teammates,” said Young.

Hometown product Ann Shelby Davis of Wesson will join the Lady Wolves in 2010-2011. Davis, a 5-10 forward, averaged 17.1 points and 7.1 rebounds for Coach Hugh Webb her senior season for the Lady Cobras. Davis was a First Team All-District selection, District Most Valuable Player, and was twice named All-Area Most Valuable Player by The Daily Leader. Davis was instrumental in leading the Lady Cobras to back-to back district championships. Davis is the daughter of Co-Lin head football coach Glenn Davis and his wife Minta.

“We’ve got very high expectations for Ann Shelby and we think her best basketball is still to come,” said Young.
