Wolves Fall To Wildcats
POPLARVILLE – The Co-Lin football team faced off against Pearl River on Thursday, October 13. The Wildcats beat the Wolves by a final of 24-14.
The Wildcats shutout the Wolves in the first half as they scored on their opening possession of the game on a 40-yard field goal to take a 3-0 lead. They remainder of the first quarter was scoreless as both team's defenses settled in and kept the offenses silent.
The Wildcats then increased their lead to 10-0 midway in the second quarter on a 45-yard scoop and score after recovering a fumble by the Wolves. The final touchdown of the first half came late in the second quarter on a 10-yard run to make the score 17-0 in favor of the Wildcats which held as the teams went to the locker rooms at halftime.
The Wildcats added their final touchdown of the game midway through the third quarter on a five-yard run to increase the lead to 24-0. The Wolves broke the shutout attempt by the Wildcats with a touchdown in the third quarter as sophomore running back Kyjuan Herndon (Jacksonville, FL) powered the ball in from two yards out capping off a five play, 75-yard drive. The Wolves failed on a two-point conversion making the score 24-6 with 4:54 left in the third quarter.
The Wolves then added a second touchdown in the third quarter with just seconds left on the clock as sophomore quarterback DeVon Tott (Mandeville, LA) connected with freshman receiver Cade Dedeaux (Sumrall) on a 35-yard catch and run for the score to end a three play, 44-yard drive. The Wolves were successful on the two-point conversion as Tott completed a pass to freshman receiver Antrelle Sims (Wesson) cutting down the Wildcats lead to 24-14.
The Wildcats then kept the Wolves comeback attempt at bay throughout the fourth quarter to secure the 24-14 win.
DeVon Tott completed 17 of 40 pass attempts for 267 yards with one touchdown and was the leading rusher for the Wolves with 67 yards on 14 carries. Freshman running back Johnnie Daniels had 55 yards on six carries while Kyjuan Herndon had nine carries for 23 yards with one touchdown.
Freshman receiver Jaylen Smith (Jacksonville, FL) led the receiving corps with 120 yards on five receptions while Cade Dedeaux had two receptions for 52 yards with one touchdown. Sophomore receiver Tyquan Henderson (Canton), freshman receiver Jamarquez Melton (West Point), Antrelle Sims, and Johnnie Daniels all recorded multiple receptions in the game.
Sophomore Ja'Len Sims (Birmingham, AL) led the Wolves defense with nine total tackles while freshman defensive backs Navarion Benson (Crystal Springs) and Elijah Short (Columbus) along with freshman defensive lineman Kevontay Wells (Jackson) added seven total tackles each. Sophomore linebacker Jamal Pye and freshman lineback Zavion Shaw (Terry) had six total tackles each.
Co-Lin falls to 3-4 overall, 1-3 in conference play, and will return to action with their final road game of the regular season against East Central. Kickoff between the Wolves and the Warriors is set for 6:30 p.m., at Warrior Field inside Bailey Stadium in Decatur.
