Co-Lin defeats Coahoma in a defensive battle
CLARKSDALE, Miss. – The Copiah-Lincoln Community College Wolves remain undefeated in 2017-2018 after a hard fought 69-49 victory over the Coahoma Tigers. The win moves the Wolves to 3-0 on the year and drops the Tigers to 1-4. Co-Lin was led by two impressive sophomore performances. Youry White, a Baton Rouge, La. native, scored 16 points and hauled in 15 rebounds, while Anthony Jones, a Wesson Attendance Center graduate, posted 16 points and 10 rebounds.
"We were very tough minded and did a great job guarding," said Co-Lin head coach Kenny Bizot. "We were able to overcome a poor shooting night… AJ [Anthony Jones] and Youry [White] were huge for us; their rebounding helped secure the win. Our game plan coming in was to not allow them to get extra possessions and they helped us execute that."
The Wolves started out strong as Co-Lin went on an 8-0 run in the first three minutes of play. The lead stretched to 12 midway through the quarter as the Wolves fired off a 7-0 run.
Late in the first half the Wolves had yet another scoring spree as White rebounded well on both ends of the floor, and the Co-Lin defense played tight. The Wolves took a 34-18 point lead into the half.
Coahoma refused to give up as the Tigers battled back in the second half. After trading baskets for the first six minutes the Tigers had a 7-2 run and cut the Wolves' lead to just nine, 44-35. Co-Lin's Jonathan Floyd led the offense in the final 10 minutes of play as the Wolves slowly rebuilt their lead and kept the Tigers out of reach.
Floyd was the next highest scorer behind White and Jones. Floyd had nine points, four rebounds, and three assists. Jeremy Treaudo came off the bench and netted seven points and added five rebounds, while Damarius Brooks and Xavier Heidelberg scored six each. Lazorian McNulty led the Wolves on the defensive end with three steals.
Malik Baily led the Tigers with 14 points and seven rebounds. Tarquise Harris added 12 points, while Robert Boyd rounded the Tiger's top scorers with 10 points. DeQuan Morris led Coahoma with nine boards.
Co-Lin shot 39 percent (29-for-75) from the field, 11 percent (2-for-19) from the three-point line, and 60 percent (9-for-15) from the foul stripe. The Tigers shot 29 percent (20-for-70) from the field, 16 percent (4-for-25) from beyond the arc, and 42 percent (5-for-12) from the free throw line.
The Wolves are back in action Monday, November 13 at 7:00 p.m. as Co-Lin hosts William Carey JV in Mullen Gymnasium. Follow @colinathletics on Twitter for updates.
