WESSON – The Co-Lin Men's Basketball team resumed MACCC play hosting East Central on Monday, February 17. The Warriors beat the Wolves, 89-73.
The teams came out trading baskets and leads throughout the opening minutes of the game, but ultimately the score was tied at 8-8 with 15:02 left to play. The Wolves then went on a 14-9 scoring run to take a 22-17 lead with 10:11 remaining in the first half. The Warriors responded with an 11-9 scoring run, but the Wolves held a 31-28 lead with 4:57 left on the clock. The Warriors then closed out the first half with a 12-3 scoring run to take a 40-34 lead over the Wolves as the teams entered the locker rooms at halftime.
The Wolves opened the second half with a quick 5-0 scoring run to cut the lead down to 42-39 with 18:30 left to play. The Warriors responded with a 17-10 scoring run to take a 59-49 lead with 13:09 left on the clock. The Warriors then used an 8-3 scoring run to extend their lead to 67-52 with 8:45 remaining. Both teams then added 12 points to their totals as the Warriors maintained their lead at 79-64 with 3:12 left in the second half. The Warriors closed out the game with a 10-9 scoring run to secure the 89-73 win over the Wolves.
Deven Bates (Jackson) led the way for the Wolves as he flirted with a triple-double performance with a game-leading 34 points paired with eight rebounds, seven assists, and two steals while Dakotah Hillard (Hazlehurst) had 18 points with five rebounds.
Javian Watkins (Jackson) had seven points with five rebounds while Zach Thompson (Hattiesburg) had five points and a team-leading ten rebounds in his first career start. Chris Stephens, Jr., (Byram) and Keisean Shields (Atoka, OK) had three points each, Prince Ojukwu (Etobicoke, Ontario) had two points, and Brick Nkugwa (Kampala, Uganda) had one point to round out the scoring for the Wolves.
Co-Lin is now 10-12 overall, 2-8 in MACCC play, and will return to action on the road against Hinds on Thursday, February 20. Tip-off between the Wolves and Bulldogs is set for 7:30 p.m., in Utica.
