Golf leads off collegiate athletics for Co-Lin in 2020
WESSON, Miss. - The first Co-Lin sport to get back into action since the start of the coronavirus pandemic is the golf team which is set to tee off the season on September 21 at Deerfield Golf Club in Canton for the MACCC District Preview. The opening round will be the first collegiate athletic event since the Co-Lin baseball team swept a pair of wins from Delgado on Monday, March 9. The team will also be under new direction this season as Allen Kent took over the reins during the summer.
"I came into this really late this year, but I am really pleased with the team that we were able to put together in this short amount of time," said Kent. "We have been working hard on our mental toughness and getting our guys in shape to walk 18-holes on back-to-back days."
The eight-member team is filled with a variety of players with different playing styles and backgrounds. Nick Davis is the only returning sophomore on the team and is quickly adapting to his new-found leadership role. The long hitter also has great hands around the green and is expected to do great things for the Wolves.
Gavin Brister is an incoming freshman that has a lot of talent despite not having a golf team in high school. He is a coachable player that has done nothing but improved since he stepped on campus.
Reese Dehart is a new face on the team that looks to make an immediate impact. He has made some slight swing adjustments since arriving and already seen great improvements and has tons of potential.
Ty Brewer is a player that can shoot really good scores when he is locked in. Brewer has been working hard on his swing and consistency and looks to be a big part of the team.
Seth Beall is a hard-working player that is making minor swing adjustments to gain some distance and make a difference on the team.
Landon Nobles is another long-hitting freshman joining the team that looks to make an immediate impact and continually shoot low scores.
Jordan Davis is a coachable player that has the potential to shoot some really low scores and become and key player in the Wolves' lineup.
Ty Nelson rounds out the new players. Nelson is an athletic player that has a complete game by combining distance off the tee and a great short game, which puts him in a prime position to go very low.
"My expectations are for us to be competitive in every tournament, and be very disciplined on the course," said Kent. "If our top guys play like they know they are capable of playing, and our other guys step up and avoid some big numbers and limit damage, we can put some pressure on our opponents this season."
Co-Lin's golf program has a storied history of success with numerous teams and individuals competing at the national level in the NJCAA National Tournament year-in-and-year-out. Despite a new coach at the helm and almost a brand new team on links, the 2020 team looks to continue that rich tradition of excellence and represent the Wolves this season.
