SUMMIT – The Co-Lin Men's Soccer team finished the 2024 regular season with a road match against Southwest on Tuesday, October 29. The Wolves used late heroics to beat the Bears with a 2-1 victory.
"This was a very tough and physical battle of a match," stated Co-Lin head coach Tom Cosgrave. "We knew Southwest were going to make it difficult on us and try to get us off our usual game. I thought we did a really good job of managing our emotions and focusing on what was needed to win the match."
Despite scoring chances for both teams throughout the first half, neither could find the back of the net as the horn sounded for half and there was no score on the board.
The Wolves broke the scoreless game early in the second half as Hudson McIntyre (Brandon) beat the Bears keeper with an assist from Alvaro De La Torre (A Coruna, Spain) in the 57th minute to give the Wolves a 1-0 lead.
The Bears then converted a penalty kick in the 71st minute to tie the game at 1-1. However, the tie did not last long as Lucas Giacomini (Newcastle, England) fired in the ball off a header from a Yohan Bedoya (Bogota, Colombia) in the 72nd minute to take a 2-1 lead. The Wolves then held off a flurry of scoring chances by the Bears to secure the 2-1 victory.
"Our counterattack threatened their defense the entire game and our defense battled non-stop," added Cosgrave. "I'm proud of the boys for ther hard work, resilience, and togetherness to get through that match."
Co-Lin is now 8-4-2 overall, 5-4-2 in MACCC play, and will continue their season in the Region 23 Quarterfinals as they take on the No. 6 Bulldogs of MGCCC on Friday, November 1. The action on the pitch kicks off at 6 p.m., in Perkinston.
