Wolves win three MACJC Titles, earn National Tournament bid
JACKSON, Miss. – The Copiah-Lincoln Community College Wolves advance to the 2018 Division I NJCAA National Championship after a strong showing at the MACJC Championship this past weekend. The tournament will take place at Collin College in Plano, Texas from May 14-May 18.
"Sebastian Osorio and Juan Pablo Pinilla will play in their third National Tournament, setting them apart from all Co-Lin players in our History," said Co-Lin head coach Brenda Smith. "Last year Sebastian finished eighth in the NJCAA singles tournament. Osorio and Pinilla's State and Region Championships paved the way for the whole team to compete in this years tournament, and we are eager to prepare and do our best."
Co-Lin's Osorio and Pinilla rolled past competition throughout the MACJC tournament in both singles and doubles play. Osorio, Co-Lin's No. 1 singles player, dropped just two games in the opening match, won a thrilling three-set match in the semifinals, and defeated Hinds Community College's Carlos Trujillo in the championship 6-4, 6-4.
Pinilla, the Wolves No. 2 singles player, cruised through quarterfinals with a 6-3, 6-0 win, defeated the No. 4 seed Mateo Garcia in the semis and overcame the No. 2 seed Lachlan Ivulich, of Meridian, 6-3, 6-4 in the championship match.
The duo then paired up for doubles has Co-Lin's No. 1 doubles team where they were the No. 3 seed in the tournament. They blanked Holmes' Elmore/Montfort 6-0, 6-0 in the opening round, upset the No. 2 seed Bell/Vos of Mississippi Gulf Coast 6-4, 6-2, and claimed the championship after a 7-5, 7-6 win over Meridian's Ivulich/Swindoll.
