Wolves Complete Season with National Tournament Appearance
WESSON – The Co-Lin Men's Tennis team recently wrapped up their season which featured a fifth-place finish at the DII National Championship. The Wolves were also third overall in the MACCC and finished fourth in the Region 23 Tournament.
The Wolves finished the season 9-7 overall including winning five of their first six matches. The team also had a 7-2 record in MACCC play with the losses coming to Gulf Coast and Jones. The third overall finish in the MACCC gave the Wolves the third seed in the Region 23 Tournament where they picked up a 5-0 win over Meridian in their first game, but then lost to Gulf Coast to fall to the third-place match where they lost a 5-4 match against Northwest. Ultimately, the Wolves earned an at-larger berth to the Division II National Tournament in Plano, Texas.
Nikoloz Gurgenidze (Tbilisi, Georgia) and Jake Bucek (Geelong, Australia) were the MACCC Doubles Champions, and both were named First Team All-MACCC selections. Additionally, Gurgenidze was the MACCC Singles Champion and was named the MACCC Player of the Year along with the Region III Sophomore of the Year.
At the national tournament, the Wolves the one doubles pairing of Gurgenidze and Bucek were national main draw semifinalist while those two were also semifinalist in their respective singles flights.
Nick Tozer (Belrose, Australia) was a main draw national finalist in the No. 2 Singles flight and was named Second Team All-American after his performance.
