WESSON – The Co-Lin Women's Basketball team returned to MACCC play by hosting East Central on Monday, February 17. The Lady Wolves won a back-and-forth battle with the Lady Warriors, 58-55.
The Lady Wolves opened the first quarter with a 10-4 scoring run to hold the lead by that margin with 5:17 left on the clock. The Lady Wolves then scored nine unanswered points to push their lead to 19-4 with 2:21 remaining. The Lady Wolves closed out the quarter with a 4-3 scoring run to hold a 23-7 lead at the end of play.
The Lady Warriors opened the second quarter with an 8-0 scoring run to cut the Lady Wolves lead down 23-15 with 5:23 left to play. The Lady Warriors then went on a 6-5 scoring run to cut the lead down to 28-21 with 3:28 left on the clock. The Lady Wolves closed out the first half with a 6-1 scoring run to push their lead to 34-22 as the teams entered the locker rooms at halftime.
The Lady Warriors opened the second half with an 8-2 scoring run to cut the Lady Wolves lead down to 36-30 with 5:22 remaining. The Lady Warriors then used an 8-5 scoring run to cut the lead down to 41-38 with 3:17 left to play. However, the Lady Wolves responded with an 8-2 scoring run to push their lead to 49-40 heading to the final quarter of play.
The Lady Warriors opened the fourth quarter with 5-1 scoring run to cut the Lady Wolves lead down to 50-44 with 5:50 left to play. The Lady Warriors then used an 8-3 scoring run to cut the lead down to 53-52 with 2:26 left on the clock. The Lady Wolves then took a three-point lead at 55-52 with just over a minute left after two made free throw by Angel Wilkinson (Brookhaven). However, the Lady Warriors tied it as Ruby Brannon drained a three-point shot with 42 seconds left. The Wolves then scored the final three points as Chrystance Walters hit a layup with 29 seconds left while Wilkinson hit a free throw with eight seconds left to make the lead 58-55. The Lady Warriors did get an attempt off at a game-tying three-pointer, but the shot was short securing the win for the Lady Wolves.
Cookie Wilkinson and Kylinn Bell (Choctaw) led the way for the Lady Wolves with 15 points, five rebounds, and one assist each while Wilkinson also had two steals. Kamaiyah Pruitt (Pass Christian) narrowly missed a double-double performance with ten points and eight rebounds.
Kaylee Johnson (Booneville) and Chrystance Walters had five points each, Amari Barnes (Tylertown) had four points, and Eymani Key (Lafayette, LA) and Jamyria Robinson (St. Martin) had two points each to round out the scoring for the Lady Wolves.
Co-Lin improves to 14-11 overall, 4-6 in MACCC play, and will return to action on the road against Hinds on Thursday, February 20. Tip-off between the Lady Wolves and Lady Bulldogs is set for 5:30 p.m., in Utica.
