Lady Wolves Won Second Straight Conference Game
SCOOBA – The Co-Lin Lady Wolves had their first road test in conference play as they faced off against East Mississippi on Thursday, January 15. The Lady Wolves outlasted the Lady Lions for a 49-45 win.
"This was a great team win! Once again, we played with toughness and tenacity for 40 minutes while defensively we were outstanding," said Co-Lin head coach Dr. Britta Stephens Belanger. "We also did a great job on the boards. We had too many silly and unforced turnovers early in this game and that is something we need to continue to work on eliminating."
The Lady Wolves came out of the gates strong and outscored the Lady Lions in the first quarter, 12-7, to hold a lead by that margin at the end of play. The Lady Lions responded by outscoring the Lady Wolves, 13-11, in the second quarter, but the Lady Wolves held a 23-20 lead as the teams headed into the locker rooms at halftime.
The Lady Lions carried their momentum into the second half as they outscored the Lady Wolves, 18-10, in the third quarter to hold a 38-33 lead heading into the fourth quarter. The final quarter of the game saw the Lady Wolves claw their way back and tie the game at 42-42 with less than two minutes of play remaining. Maddison Mitchell (Baton Rouge, LA) then picked the pocket of a Lady Lions guard and went coast-to-coast for a layup to give the Lady Wolves a 44-42 lead and spark a 7-3 scoring run to close out the game and secure the 49-45 victory.
Kamaiyah Pruitt (Pass Christian) led the way for the Lady Wolves as she posted a double-double performance with 16 points and 12 rebounds along with one assist and three steals while Eymani Key (Lafayette, LA) had 12 points with two rebounds, three assists, one steal, and one block.
Akeelah Hobson (Oakdale, LA) had nine points with six rebounds and three assists while Tyra Johnson (Morton) added five points with one rebound and one steal. Maddison Mitchell had four points, with Jamyria Robinson (St. Martin) and Zion Nelson (Byram) adding two points and one point respectively to round out the scoring while Robinson added five rebounds to her night and Nelson had nine boards.
"Kam Pruitt had another outstanding outing for us while Eymani Key gave us an early spark to help us build a lead," added Stephens Belanger. "Zion Nelson's deflections on defense were huge in giving us transition opportunities throughout the game. Our press late in the game forced East Mississippi into several turnovers, which allowed us to close the game out. Jay Robinson provided a huge spark off the bench in this game including drawing two huge charges and she got several rebounds at critical times."
Co-Lin improves to 10-3 overall, 2-0 in MACCC play, and will return to action hosting Holmes on Tuesday, January 20. Tip-off between the Lady Bulldogs and the Lady Wolves is set for 5:30 p.m., at Mullen Gym in Wesson.
