Lady Wolves Come Up Short Against Lady Bulldogs in Overtime

WESSON – The Co-Lin Women's Basketball team continued MACCC play by hosting Holmes on Tuesday, January 20. The Lady Wolves and Lady Bulldogs needed extra time to find a winner in the contest as the Lady Bulldogs came away with a 74-69 win over the Lady Wolves.

Both teams came out in the first quarter and were trading baskets and leads, but ultimately the Lady Bulldogs held an 8-7 lead over the Lady Wolves with 5:15 left to play. The Lady Bulldogs then closed out the quarter by outscoring the Lady Wolves, 9-6, to extend their lead to 17-13.

The Lady Bulldogs then opened the second quarter with another 9-6 scoring run pushing their lead to 26-19 with 6:56 remaining. The Lady Bulldogs then used a 6-4 scoring run to increase their lead to 32-23 with 3:05 left in the first half. The Lady Wolves closed out the quarter and half with a 5-3 scoring run, but the Lady Bulldogs held a 35-28 lead as the teams entered the locker rooms at halftime.

The Lady Wolves carried that momentum over to the start of the second half as they opened the third quarter with a 6-5 scoring run to cut the Lady Bulldogs lead down to 40-34 with 6:57 left to play. The Lady Wolves then went on a 7-3 scoring run cutting the lead down to just two points, 43-41, with 2:32 remaining. However, the Lady Bulldogs responded with a 4-1 run to close out the quarter and push their lead to 47-42 entering the final quarter of play.

The Lady Wolves opened the fourth quarter with six unanswered points as they took a 48-47 lead with 6:50 left on the clock. The Lady Bulldogs responded with a 6-5 scoring run to tie the game at 53-53 with 3:37 left to play in regulation. The teams then matched scoring outputs with eight points each to end the game tied at 61-61 sending it to overtime.

In the overtime period, the Lady Wolves scored seven unanswered points to take a 68-61 lead over the Lady Bulldogs. However, the Lady Bulldogs responded with a 6-1 scoring run to cut the lead down to 69-67 with one minute remaining. The Lady Bulldogs then closed out the game with five unanswered points to seal the 74-69 win.

Eymani Key (Lafayette, LA) led the way offensively for the Lady Wolves with a career-high 22 points along with five rebounds, two assists, three steals, and one block while Zion Nelson (Byram) also set a new career-high with 18 points along with eight rebounds, three steals, and one block.

Akeelah Hobson (Oakdale, LA) had nine points with eight rebounds while Maddison Mitchell (Baton Rouge, LA) had seven points and Kamaiyah Pruitt (Pass Christian) had six points. Amari Barnes (Tylertown) had three points with Jalynn Applewhite (Gulfport) and Jamyria Robinson (St. Martin) had two points each to round out the scoring for the Lady Wolves.

Co-Lin is now 10-4 overall, 2-1 in MACCC play, and will return to action on the road against Itawamba on Thursday, January 22. Tip-off between the Lady Wolves and the Lady Indians is set for 5:30 p.m., at the Davis Events Center in Fulton.
