Lady Wolves Drop Thriller on Sophomore Night

WESSON – The Co-Lin Women's Basketball team hosted Gulf Coast on Thursday, February 26 for their home finale of the regular season. The Lady Wolves took the Bulldogs to the limit, but came up short, 60-59.

The teams were evenly matched in the opening minutes of the first quarter as the game was tied 7-7 after a jumper by Kamaiyah Pruitt (Pass Christian) with 5:27 left to play. The Bulldogs then went on a 7-2 scoring run to take a 14-9 lead over the Lady Wolves with 2:08 remaining. Both teams closed out the quarter by adding two points each to their totals as the Lady Bulldogs lead stood at 16-11 at the end of play.

The Bulldogs opened the second quarter with a 6-4 scoring run to push their lead to 22-15 6:38 left on the clock. The Lady Wolves responded with a 7-4 scoring run cutting the lead to 26-22 after a jumper by Pruitt with 2:45 remaining in the first half. The Bulldogs closed out the quarter outscoring the Lady Wolves, 4-2, and pushing their lead to 30-24 as the teams headed to the locker rooms for halftime.

The Bulldogs opened the third quarter and second half with a 9-5 scoring run pushing their lead to 39-29 with 6:23 remaining. The Lady Wolves then went on a 10-8 scoring run to cut the Bulldogs lead down to 47-39 with 2:16 left to play after a jumper by Eymani Key (Lafayette, LA). The Lady Wolves then closed out the quarter outscoring the Bulldogs, 4-1, to cut the lead down to 48-43 heading to the final quarter of play.

The Bulldogs opened the fourth quarter with a 5-2 scoring run to push their lead to 53-45 with 6:15 left on the clock. The Lady Wolves responded with a 7-2 scoring run to cut the lead down to 55-52 after a jumper by Zion Nelson (Byram) with 3:30 remaining. The Lady Wolves then used a 7-4 scoring run to cut the lead down to one-point, 60-59, after a three-pointer by Pruitt with 43 seconds left. After a missed jumper by the Bulldogs, the Lady Wolves got an attempt at a layup to potentially take the lead, but came up short while the Bulldogs were then able to run out the clock and secure the win.

Kamaiyah Pruitt had a monster game for the Lady Wolves as she led the way with a double-double including a new career-high 31 points, leading all scorers, along with 10 rebounds. Zion Nelson had nine points with five rebounds and one assist, Maddison Mitchell (Baton Rouge, LA) had eight points with three rebounds and three assists while Eymani Key had seven points with five assists and three steals. Akeelah Hobson (Oakdale, LA) and Jalynn Applewhite (Gulfport) had two points each to round out the scoring for the Lady Wolves.

Co-Lin is now 14-10 overall, 6-7 in MACCC play and will return to action on the road against East Central to wrap up the regular season on Monday, March 2. Tip-off between the Lady Wolves and the Lady Warriors is set for 5:30 p.m. at Brackeen-Wood Gymnasium in Decatur.
