Tennis Takes Two From Itawamba
WESSON, Miss. – The Co-Lin men's and women's tennis teams hosted Itawamba on Tuesday, March 24. Both teams picked up wins on the day, with the men earning a 5-4 victory and the women securing a 9-0 win.
WOMEN'S MATCH
The Lady Wolves swept the doubles matches as Georgina Labusch (Verl, Germany) and Ruri Takeuchi (Chiba, Japan) earned an 8-4 win at one doubles. Domenica Gruezo (Quito, Ecuador) and Ady Locke (Brookhaven) followed with an 8-4 victory at two doubles, while Allie Grace McNeill (Brookhaven) and Clara Barton Calcote (Wesson) secured the point at three doubles by default.
In singles play, the women won all six matches. Takeuchi earned a 6-2, 6-0 win at one singles, while Gruezo followed with a 6-0, 6-1 victory at two singles. Labusch secured a 6-0, 6-2 win at three singles, and Locke added a 6-0, 6-1 victory at four singles. Calcote earned a 6-0, 6-0 win at five singles, and Ella Thompson (Brookhaven) secured the final point at six singles by default to complete the 9-0 victory.
MEN'S MATCH
The Wolves earned one of three points in doubles. Nikoloz Gurgenidze (Tbilisi, Georgia) and Jake Bucek (Geelong, Australia) picked up an 8-1 win in one doubles. Nick Tozer (Belrose, Australia) and Jax Leggett (Bogue Chitto) fell at two doubles, 6-8, while James Rooks (Jackson) and Lane Breland (Perkinston) dropped three doubles, 6-8.
In singles action, the men claimed four of six matches. Gurgenidze earned a 6-1, 6-4 win at one singles, while Tozer followed with a 2-6, 6-1, 1-0 victory at two singles. Bucek picked up a 6-2, 6-2 win at three singles. Rooks fell at four singles, 3-6, 2-6, and Mason Brand dropped his match at five singles, 3-6, 6-7 (8). Leggett secured the match-clinching point with a 6-2, 6-0 win at six singles to give the men the 5-4 victory.
With the wins, the women improve to 9-1 (7-0), while the men move to 7-3 (6-1). Both teams return to action Friday, March 27 hosting Jones with championship implications on the line for both squads. The matches start at 11 a.m.
