Wolves Pick Up Win Over Weekend
WESSON – The Co-Lin Baseball team resumed play this weekend with three games over the weekend. The Wolves played a single game against Rend Lake on Friday, February 21, and then followed that with a doubleheader against Southeastern on Saturday, February 22. The Wolves started the weekend strong with a 13-3 win over the Warriors on Friday but then dropped both games of the doubleheader against the Blackhawks, 12-4 and 8-3, on Saturday.
CO-LIN 13 REND LAKE 3
After a scoreless top of the first, the Wolves plated two runs in the bottom half of the inning as Reise Thomas (Florence) drew a leadoff walk to get the offense going. Later in the inning, Donovan Moore (Bude) was hit-by-pitch to put two runners on with one out. Trey Davidson (Brandon) then drew a walk to load the bases while Caleb Brooks (Brandon) drew a second-straight walk scoring Thomas. Moore then scored on an RBI groundout by Sam Cook to make the lead, 2-0.
The Warriors then responded with one run to cut the lead down to 2-1 in the top of the second inning. The score remained that until the Warriors plated two runs in the top of the sixth to take a 3-2 lead over the Wolves. The Wolves then looked to respond with in the bottom of the inning as they loaded the bases with two outs, but a strikeout ended the inning with no scoring done.
However, the Wolves answered as they exploded for eight runs in the bottom of the seventh with Thomas drawing a leadoff walk and then advanced to second on a bunt single by Tucker Jones (Brandon). Later in the inning, both runners advanced on a double steal while Davidson drew a walk to load the bases. Thomas then scored on an RBI single by Brooks to tie the game while Sam Cook delivered a two-RBI single scoring Jones and Davidson to give the Wolves a 5-3 lead. Avery Griffin (Brookhaven) then drew a walk to load the bases again for the Wolves while Evan Holifield (Stringer) delivered the second two-RBI single of the inning scoring Brooks and Cook to push the lead to 7-3. Gavin Bledsoe (Brandon) then reached on a fielder's choice as Griffin was out at home while Thomas then drew his second walk of the inning to load the bases for the third time in the inning. Jones then stepped up and delivered a bases clearing, three-RBI triple scoring Holifield, Bledsoe, and Thomas while making the score, 10-3.
After the Wolves held the Warriors scoreless in the top of the eighth, they scored three runs in the bottom half of the inning to bring the game to an early close. Davidson got the offense going with a leadoff single and then later advanced to second as Cook was hit-by-pitch to put two runners on with one out. Griffin then hit an RBI single scoring Davidson while a single by Holifield loaded the bases with one out for the Wolves as they lead stood at 11-3. Bledsoe was then hit-by-pitch scoring Cook while Griffin scored the game-ending run after Thomas drew a walk to secure the 13-3 victory.
The Wolves totaled ten hits as a team as Tucker Jones, Sam Cook, Avery Griffin, and Evan Holifield had two hits apiece while Trey Davidson and Caleb Brooks had one hit each. Jones and Cook led the Wolves in RBIs with three each while Brooks and Holifield had two RBIs each with Griffin, Reise Thomas, and Gavin Bledsoe adding one RBI each.
Cohen Weinhofer (Ocean Springs) got the start and improved to 2-0 with the win while pitching 5.2 innings and allowing three runs, two earned, on three hits with four walks and nine strikeouts. Nash Sturdivant (Brandon) pitched 1.1 innings of scoreless and hitless relief with two walks and three strikeouts while Lucas Harrington (Youngsville, LA) pitched one inning of scoreless and hitless relief with one strikeout.
SOUTHEASTERN 12 CO-LIN 4
After holding the Blackhaws scoreless in the top of the first, the Wolves got on the board first with some early offensive fireworks. Donovan Moore stepped up to the plate with two outs on the board, took one swing of the bat, and crushed a 1-0 pitch over the left field fence for a solo home run to give the Wolves a 1-0 lead.
The Blackhaws then loaded the bases and tied the game with an RBI single in the top of the second making the score, 1-1. The Wolves then regained the lead with a pair of runs in the bottom of the third. Reise Thomas got the scoring started as he stepped in the box with one out and smashed a 1-0 pitch over the left field fence for a solo home run making the score, 2-1. Tucker Jones then hit a bunt single while Moore was hit-by-pitch to put two runners on with one out. After the Wolves pulled off a double steal, Jones scored on a sacrifice fly by Trey Davidson increasing the lead to 3-1.
The Blackhawks offense then responded as they plated seven runs in the top of fourth highlighted by a grand slam to score the final four runs and take an 8-3 lead over the Wolves. The Blackhawks increased their lead with a pair of runs in the fifth and sixth innings while holding the Wolves scoreless to make the score, 12-3.
The Wolves final run of the game came in the bottom of the seventh as Bradley Hanlon (Monroe, LA) reached on an error, stole second, and scored on a one-out RBI single by Thomas making the score, 12-4. The Wolves then got one baserunner in the final two innings via a one-out single in the eighth, but no more scoring was done as the Blackhawks sealed the 12-4 win in game one.
The Wolves totaled seven hits as a team as Reise Thomas and Tucker Jones had two hits apiece while Donovan Moore, Trey Davidson, and Avery Griffin had one hit each. Thomas led the Wolves in RBIs with two while Moore and Davidson had one RBI each.
Cameron Patterson (Central, LA) got the start for the Wolves and took the loss (0-2) while pitching three innings and allowing seven runs, five earned, on two hits with five walks and four strikeouts. Tanner Blackwell (Flora) pitched 1.2 innings of relief allowing three runs, all earned, on two hits with with two walks and three strikeouts. Jacob Buffalo (Foxworth) pitched 0.2 innings of relief allowing two runs, both earned, on one hits with three walks while Carter Leggett (Laurel) of scoreless relief allowing four hits with two walks. Judson Griffin (Brookhaven) pitched one inning of scoreless and hitless relief with one strikeout.
SOUTHEASTERN 8 CO-LIN 3
Once again, the Wolves broke a scoreless tie with a single run in the bottom of the first as Reise Thomas drew a leadoff walk to get the offense going. Tucker Jones then singled, while Donovan Moore drew a walk to load the bases with no outs. Thomas then scored on a passed ball making the score, 1-0, while the Wolves then went strikeout, pop out, groundout to leave two runners in scoring position.
The Blackhawks responded with one run in the top of the second to tie the game and then took a 3-1 lead with a pair of runs in the top of the third. However, the Wolves responded with a pair of runs in the bottom half of the third as Thomas was hit-by-pitch and Jones drew a walk to put two runners on with no outs. After the Wolves pulled a double steal, Thomas scored on an RBI single by Moore while Jones scored on a sacrifice fly by Trey Davidson making the score, 3-3.
The Blackhawks then regained the lead with a pair of runs in the top of the fourth making the score, 5-3. The Wolves looked to respond in the bottom half as Bradley Hanlon and Thomas hit back-to-back singles with two outs, but a groundout brought the inning to a close as the score remained 5-3.
The Blackhawks increased their lead to 7-3 with a pair of runs in the top of the fifth. Once again, the Wolves looked to respond in the bottom half of the inning after a two-out single by Evan Holifield loaded the bases, but a strikeout by the next batter left the bases loaded and the score standing at 7-3.
The Blackhawks then added their final run in the top of the sixth and retired the Wolves in order in the sixth and seventh innings to secure the 8-3 win and sweep of the Wolves.

Wes White (Flowood) got the start and took the loss (1-2) while pitching 3.1 innings and allowing five runs, all earned, on eight hits with one walk and five strikeouts. Lucas Harrington pitched 2.2 innings of relief allowing three runs, two earned, on five hits with one walk and five strikeouts while Nash Sturdivant pitched an inning of scoreless and hitless relief.
Co-Lin is now 12-6 overall and will return to action with two games on Wednesday, February 26. The Wolves will play the Hinds Eagles at Noon and then the Southwest Bears at 6 p.m., while the Eagles and Bears will play each other at 3 p.m., at Sullivan Field.
