Wolves Sweep Marion Military Institute

WESSON – The Co-Lin Baseball team returned to action hosting Marion Military Institute on Sunday, February 22. The Wolves swept the Tigers taking game one, 11-6, and game two, 10-0.

GAME ONE

The Wolves got on the board and set the tone early with three runs in the bottom of the first as Bryson Jones (Brandon) was hit-by-pitch to start the inning. Jones advanced to second on a single by Avery Griffin (Brookhaven) and then scored on an RBI-single by Trey Davidson (Brandon) to give the Wolves a 1-0 lead. Griffin then scored on an RBI-groundout by Bradley Hanlon (Monroe, LA) while later in the inning Davidson scored on an RBI-single by John Mark Grissom (Pearl) increasing the lead to 3-0.

The Tigers then hit a leadoff solo home run in the top of the second to cut the lead down to 3-1 and then scored two runs in the top of the third to tie the game at 3-3. However, the Wolves responded by retaking the lead with a single run in the bottom half of the inning as Davidson hit a leadoff double to get the offense started. Davidson took third on a balk and then scored on an RBI groundout by Donovan Moore (Roxie) to give the Wolves a 4-3 lead.

The Tigers then used a leadoff solo home run in the top of the fourth to tie the game at 4-4. However, the Wolves once again responded this time with two runs in the bottom half to regain the lead as Jacob Chancelor (Brandon) drew a leadoff walk, but was forced out as Bryan Travis (Gulfport) reached on a fielder's choice. Back-to-back singles by Evan Holifield (Stringer) and Jones then loaded the bases with one out while Travis then scored on a balk to give the Wolves a 5-4 lead. Holifield then scored on an RBI-groundout by Griffin increasing the lead to 6-4.

The Wolves then increased their lead with three runs in the bottom of the fifth as Moore was hit-by-pitch with one out to get the offense going. Later in the inning, Chancelor drew a walk to put two runners on with two outs while Travis then delivered an RBI-double scoring Moore and Chancelor scored on an error on the play. Travis then scored on an RBI-single by Holifield increasing the lead to 9-4.

The Wolves added their final two runs in the bottom of the sixth as Griffin crushed a 2-2 pitch over the fence in right field for a leadoff solo home run making the score, 10-4. Later in the inning, Hanlon drew a walk, stole second, and scored on an RBI-single by Moore increasing the lead to 11-4.

The Tigers then scored two runs in the top of the seventh and had one more runner in scoring position, but then the Wolves got two flyouts and a strikeout to end the game and secure the 11-6 victory.

The Wolves totaled 12 hits as a team with Bryson Jones, Avery Griffin, Trey Davidson, and Evan Holifield all had two hits apiece while Donovan Moore, John Mark Grissom,  Jacob Chancelor, and Bryan Travis had one hit each. Griffin and Moore led the Wolves in RBIs with two apiece while Davidson, Bradley Hanlon, Grissom, Travis, and Holifield had one RBI each.

Jennings Kimbrell (Flowood) got the start and improved to 3-0 overall with six innings pitched allowing six runs, all earned, on eight hits with one walk and eight strikeouts. Caleb Flynn (Laurel) pitched one inning of scoreless and hitless relief with one walk and one strikeout.

GAME TWO

The Wolves exploded for eight runs in the bottom of the first as Bryson Jones hit a leadoff single and then scored on an RBI-triple by Avery Griffin. After an infield single by Trey Davidson, Griffin scored as Bradley Hanlon reached on an error making the score, 2-0. Donovan Moore was then hit-by-pitch to load the bases with no outs. Later in the inning, Davidson and Hanlon scored on a two-RBI single by Jacob Chancelor increasing the score to 4-0. Later in the inning, Moore scored on an RBI-single by Matthew Combs (Hurley) while Chancelor then scored on an RBI-single by Jones and an error on the play allowed both Combs and Jones to score making the lead, 8-0.

The Wolves scored a single run in the bottom of the second as Hanlon was hit-by-pitch to start the inning, Later in the inning, Hanlon stole second, took third on an error, and then scored on an RBI-groundout by John Mark Grissom pushing the lead to 9-0.

The final run came in the bottom of the fourth as Bryson Bey (Ellisville), Kade Walker (Magee), and Chancelor drew three straight walks to load the bases with one out. Later in the inning, Bey scored as Combs drew a walk to making the score, 10-0. The Wolves then got four strikeouts in the top of the fifth via a dropped third strike play, to secure the game two win and sweep.

The Wolves totaled eight hits as a team as Bryson Jones, Avery Griffin, and Jacob Chancelor had two hits apiece while Trey Davidson and Matthew Combs had one hit each. Chancelor and Combs led the Wolves in RBIs with two apiece while Jones, Griffin, Bradley Hanlon, and John Mark Grisssom had one RBI each.

Cohen Weinhofer got the start and picked up his first win of the season (1-1) with the complete game shutout allowing three hits with three walks and 11 strikeouts.

Co-Lin is now 9-5 overall and will return to action with a road doubleheader on Wednesday, February 25 at Southwest. The Wolves will play Hinds with a first pitch of 3 p.m., and then will play the Bears following the game against Hinds.
