WESSON – The Co-Lin Baseball team played their final non-conference games with a three-game series against Parkland with a doubleheader on Friday, March 6, and a single game on Saturday, March 7. The Wolves took two of three from the Cobras as they split the doubleheader with the Cobras taking game one, 11-6, and the Wolves taking game two, 10-0 while the Wolves also took game three, 17-3.
GAME ONE
The Wolves got on the board first as they scored two runs in the bottom of the first as Bryson Jones (Brandon) got a leadoff single to get the offense started. Later in the inning, Trey Davidson singled (Brandon) to put two runners on with one out while Bradley Hanlon (Monroe, LA) hit an RBI-single scoring Jones. Davidson then scored on an RBI-single by Donovan Moore (Roxie) giving the Wolves a 2-0 lead.
After the Cobras used a solo home run to cut the lead in half, 2-1, in the top of the second, the Wolves responded with two runs in the bottom half. Bryan Travis (Gulfport) hit a leadoff single while Evan Holifield (Stringer) was hit-by-pitch while both then advanced to scoring position on a sacrifice bunt by Jones. Travis then scored on an RBI-single by Avery Griffin while Hanlon hit an RBI-groundout scoring Holifield and increasing the lead to 4-1.
The Cobras then scored six runs in the top of the third behind the strength of a grand slam and solo home run to take a 7-4 lead over the Wolves. The Cobras then scored one run in the fourth and one run in the fifth to increase their lead to 9-4.
However, the Wolves responded with two runs in the bottom of the fifth as Hanlon crushed a 0-1 pitch over the fence in left field for a leadoff solo home run. Later in the inning, Caleb Brooks (Brandon) smashed a 3-1 pitch over the left field fence for a solo home run making the score, 9-6. The Cobras then got both runs back with a two-run home run in the top of the sixth increasing their lead to 11-6.
The Wolves then looked to respond in the bottom half as back-to-back singles by Cam Murphy (Brandon) and Davidson put two runners on with one out, but a strikeout followed by a groundout brought the potential rally to a close. The Wolves then got a leadoff walk in the bottom of the seventh by Brooks, but then three straight outs brought the game to an end as the Cobras sealed the win.
The Wolves totaled 11 hits as a team as Trey Davidson and Bradley Hanlon had two hits apiece while Bryson Jones, Avery Griffin, Cam Murphy, Donovan Moore, Caleb Brooks, Bryan Travis, and Evan Holifield had one hit each. Hanlon led the Wolves in RBIs with two while Griffin, Davidson, Moore, and Brooks had one RBI each.
Cohen Weinhofer (Ocean Springs) got the start and took the loss (2-2) while pitching 3.2 innings allowing eight runs, all earned, on six hits with three walks and two strikeouts. Nash Sturdivant (Brandon) pitched 1.1 innings of relief allowing one earned run on four hits with one walk and one strikeout. Jacob Buffalo (Foxworth) pitched one inning of relief allowing two earned runs on one hit with one walk while Caleb Flynn (Laurel) pitched one inning of scoreless relief allowing one hit with two strikeouts.
GAME TWO
The Wolves got on the board with one run in the bottom of the first as Bryson Jones was hit-by-pitch while Avery Griffin drew a walk to put two runners on with no outs. After Griffin was forced out while Trey Davidson reached on a fielder's choice, Jones scored on an RBI-groundout by Bradley Hanlon making the score, 1-0.
The Wolves then added a solo run in the bottom of the second as Donovan Moore drew a one-out walk, stole second, and later scored on an RBI-single by Evan Holifield increasing the lead to 2-0. The Wolves added four runs in the third as Griffin hit a leadoff triple and then scored on an RBI-double by Davidson increasing the lead to 3-0. Later in the inning, Brady White (Ethel) was hit-by pitch to put two runners on with one out. Caleb Brooks then crushed a 1-0 pitch over the fence in left field for a three-run home run pushing the lead to 6-0.
The Wolves added a single run in the fourth as Jones hit a leadoff double and later scored on an RBI-double by Davidson making the score, 7-0. The Wolves then ended the game with three runs in the fifth as Brooks singled while Moore and Matthew Combs (Hurley) drew back-to-back walks to load the bases with no outs. Holifield then hit a two-RBI single scoring Brooks and Moore while Jones was hit-by-pitch to reload the bases with no outs. Later in the inning, Holifield scored as Davidson reached on a fielder's choice ending the game, 10-0, and securing the split of the doubleheader for the Wolves.
The Wolves totaled 10 hits as a team as Trey Davidson, Caleb Brooks, and Evan Holifield had two hits apiece with Bryson Jones, Avery Griffin, Bradley Hanlon, and Matthew Combs had one hit each. Davidson, Brooks, and Holifield had three RBIs each for the Wolves while Hanlon had one RBI.
Akavion Griffith picked up his first collegiate win (1-2) with the complete game effort allowing one hit with three walks and two strikeouts.
GAME THREE
The Wolves got on the board first again as they scored five runs in the bottom of the first as Bryson Jones and Avery Griffin drew back-to-back walks to start the inning. Griffin was then forced out as Trey Davidson reached on a fielder's choice while Jones then scored on a passed ball giving the Wolves a 1-0 lead. Brady White then hit an RBI-single scoring Davidson while John Mark Grissom (Pearl) and Caleb Brooks drew back-to-back walks to load the bases with one out. Donovan Moore drew a third straight walk scoring White wile Evan Holifield hit a two-RBI single scoring Grissom and Brooks and increasing the lead to 5-0.
The Wolves then added a single run as Davidson hit a one-out single and then scored on an RBI-single by Bradley Hanlon pushing the lead to 6-0. The Wolves increased their lead with a second five-run inning in the bottom of the third as Moore, Holifield, and Jones hit three straight singles to load the bases with one out. Griffin then hit a fourth-straight single scoring Moore while Davidson cleared the bases with a three-RBI triple scoring Holifield, Jones, and Griffin increasing the lead to 10-0. Davidson then scored on a sacrifice fly by Hanlon making the score, 11-0.
The Wolves added a single run in the bottom of the fourth as Jacob Chancelor (Brandon) drew a leadoff walk to get the offense started. Later in the inning, Moore drew a walk while Holifield singled to load the bases with one out. Jones was then hit-by pitch scoring Chancelor and pushing the lead to 12-0.
The Wolves then had their third five-run inning of the game in the bottom of the fifth as Hanlon singled, Hayes Hebert (Lafayette, LA) drew a walk, and Chancelor was hit-by-pitch to load the bases with no outs. Brooks then cleared the bases with a three-RBI double scoring Hanlon, Hebert, and Chancelor and increasing the lead to 15-0. Cam Murphy then drew a walk while Kade Walker (Magee) was hit-by-pitch to once again load the bases with no outs. Matthew Combs then drew a walk scoring Brooks while Murphy later scored on a sacrifice fly by Davidson making the score, 17-0.
The Cobras then scored three runs in the top of the sixth while the Wolves were retired in order making the score, 17-3. The Cobras were then retired in order in the top of the seventh securing the game three and series win for the Wolves.
The Wolves totaled 12 hits as a team as Evan Holifield led the way going 3-for-3 with Trey Davidson and Bradley Hanlon had two hits each while Bryson Jones, Avery Griffin, Brady White, Caleb Brooks, and Donovan Moore had one hit each. Davidson led the Wolves in RBIs with four, Brooks had three, while Hanlon and Holifield had two apiece with Jones, Matthew Combs, Griffin, White, and Moore had one RBI each.
Cameron Patterson (Central, LA) got the start and improved to 2-1 overall with five scoreless innings allowing two hits with five walks and two strikeouts. Lucian Walker (Starkville) pitched one inning of relief allowing three runs, all earned, on three hits with two strikeouts while MT Breland (Columbia) pitched one inning of scoreless and hitless relief with one strikeout.
Co-Lin is now 15-8 overall and will open conference play on the road against Meridian on Tuesday, March 10. First pitch between the Wolves and the No. 19 Eagles is set for 2 p.m., at Scaggs Field in Meridian.
