Lady Wolves Compete in PCB JUCO Showdown for Opening Weekend
PANAMA CITY BEACH, Fla. – The Co-Lin Softball team hit the road for four games at the Panama City Beach JUCO Showdown on Friday, February 6, and Saturday, February 7. The Lady Wolves went 3-1 on the weekend sweeping their first day of play and then splitting day two.
CO-LIN 6 ROANE STATE 2
The game was scoreless through the first two innings, but the Lady Wolves broke through with four runs in the top of the third. Noelle Laiche (Gonzales, LA) drew a leadoff walk and then scored on an RBI-double by Brelie Phillips (Conehatta) to give the Lady Wolves a 1-0 lead. After a single by Ayari VanBlaircom (Daphne, AL) to put two runners on with no outs, Stella Roberts (Raymond) crushed an 0-1 pitch over the left field fence for a three-run home run to extend the lead to 4-0.
Roane State then responded with their only two runs of the game in the bottom of the third inning to cut the lead in half at 4-2. However, the Lady Wolves got one run back in the top of the fourth as Phillips came to bat with two outs on the board and crushed a 2-0 pitch over the fence in centerfield for a solo home run and extending the lead to 5-2. The Lady Wolves added their final run in the top of the fifth as Morgan Chisolm (Madison) hit a leadoff single to get the offense going. Chisolm then stole second, advanced to third on a groundout by Annie Poole (Brookhaven), and then scored on an RBI-groundout by Addison Lindely (Madison) to increase the lead to 6-2.
Roane State then got one baserunner via a walk over the final three innings as the Lady Wolves secured the season opening victory.
The Lady Wolves totaled 10 hits as Brelie Phillips went a perfect 4-for-4 at the plate with two RBIs while Ayari VanBlaircom had a pair of hits. Morgan Chisolm, Annie Poole, Addison Lindley, and Stella Roberts had one hit apiece while Lindley had one RBI while Roberts led the team with three RBIs.
Ava Browder (Picayune) got her first collegiate win in her first collegiate start as she pitched a complete game while allowing two earned runs on five hits with two walks and three strikeouts.
CO-LIN 3 PENSACOLA STATE 2
The Pirates jumped ahead of the Lady Wolves early as they scored a single run on a solo home run in the top of the second inning to take an early 1-0 lead. However, the Lady Wolves responded and took the lead with a pair of runs in the bottom of the third as Noelle Laiche got the offense going with a one-out single. Laiche then scored on an RBI-triple by Brelie Phillips to tie the game at 1-1. Phillips then scored on an RBI-single by Ayari VanBlaircom to give the Lady Wolves a 2-1 lead.
The Pirates then responded with a single run in the top of the fourth to tie the game at 2-2. The Lady Wolves then scored a single run of their own in the bottom half of the inning as Morgan Chisolm hit a one-out single to start the offense. Later in the inning, Chisolm scored as Ahlyana Houston (Summit) reached on an error to give the Lady Wolves a 3-2 lead.
The Pirates then looked to tie the game in the top of the fifth after a single with two runners on, but Houston threw out the potential game-tying run at home to maintain the lead for the Lady Wolves. The Pirates were then retired in order in the sixth and got a two-out single in the seventh followed by a groundout to secure the 3-2 victory for the Lady Wolves.
The Lady Wolves totaled six hits as Brelie Phillips, Ayari VanBlaircom, Morgan Chisolm, Annie Poole, Ahlyana Houston, and Noelle Laiche had one hit each. Phillips and VanBlairCom led the Lady Wolves in RBIs with one each.
Addison Lindley got the win in her first start of the season with a complete game effort allowing two earned runs on seven hits with one walk and three strikeouts.
CO-LIN 6 WABASH VALLEY 4
The Lady Wolves took an early lead with a single run in the top of the first as Brelie Phillips hit a leadoff double, stole third, and scored on a sacrifice fly by Ayari VanBlaircom making the score, 1-0. However, the Lady Warriors answered with three runs in the bottom of the first while taking advantage of an error by the Lady Wolves making the score, 3-1.
That score held until the Lady Wolves cut the lead down with a solo run in the of the third as VanBlaircom smashed an 0-1 pitch over the centerfield fence for a solo home run and cut the lead down to 3-2. The Lady Wolves then tied the game with a solo run as Annie Poole reached base on an error and advanced to second on the play. Later in the inning, Poole scored on an RBI-single by Addison Lindley tying the game at 3-3.
The Lady Wolves then took the lead with two runs in the top of the fifth. Noelle Laiche got the offense started as she crushed a 2-2 pitch over the fence in centerfield for a leadoff solo home run and giving the Lady Wolves a 4-3 lead. Later in the inning, VanBlaircom struck again as she lasered the first pitch she saw over the centerfield fence for her second solo home run of the game increasing the lead to 5-3.
The final run for the Lady Wolves came in the top of the seventh as Phillips hit a leadoff double and later scored on an RBI-single by Emilie Williams (Summit) making the score, 6-3. The Lady Warriors started the bottom half of the inning with a leadoff solo home run to cut the lead down to 6-4; however, the Lady Wolves then got back-to-back outs followed by a single and then a groundout to secure the 6-4 victory.
The Lady Wolves totaled seven hits as a team with Brelie Phillips and Ayari VanBlaircom having two hits each while Emilie Williams, Addison Lindley, and Noelle Laiche had one hit each. VanBlaircom led the Lady Wolves in RBIs with three while Williams, Lindley, and Laiche had one RBI each.
Lily Crum (Vidalia, LA) got the start in the circle and earned a no decision as she pitched one inning and allowed three runs, two earned, on two hits with three walks and one strikeout. Maddie West (Gonzales, LA) got her first collegiate win as she pitched 4.2 innings of scoreless relief with four hits, one walk, and three strikeouts. Addison Lindley picked up her first career save as she pitched 1.1 innings of relief allowing one earned run on two hits.
ST. JOHN'S RIVER 10 CO-LIN 2
The Vikings took advantage of an error by the Lady Wolves as they scored three runs in the top of the first to take an early 3-0 lead. The Vikings then added one run in the second and two in the fourth to push their lead to 6-0.
The Lady Wolves scored their runs in the bottom of the fourth as Anna Grace Rice (Greenwood) hit a leadoff single to get the offense started. Later in the inning, Morgan Chisolm ambushed the first pitch she saw and hit it over the left field fence for a two-run home run cutting the lead down to 6-2. However, the Viking scored three runs in the fifth and one in the sixth while continuing to stimy the Lady Wolves offense and take the game, 10-2.
The Lady Wolves totaled three hits as Morgan Chisolm had two hits with two RBIs while Anna Grace Rice had one hit.
Ava Browder took the loss and moved to 1-1 overall while pitching 3.2 innings and allowing six runs, four earned, on nine hits with two strikeouts. Addison Lindley pitched one inning of relief allowing three runs, all earned, on four hits while Maddie West pitched 1.1 innings of relief allowing one earned run on one hit with two walks.
Co-Lin is 3-1 overall on the season and will return to action this weekend at the Coyote Classic in Gulf Shores, Alabama with two games on Friday, February 13, and two more on Saturday, February 14.
