Lady Wolves Sweep Weekend at JUCO Extravaganza

OXFORD, Ala. – The Co-Lin Softball team took to the road and played three games at Choccolocco Park in Oxford, Alabama in the JUCO Extravaganza this week. The Lady Wolves opened their weekend with a 3-1 win over No. 5 Des Moines Area on Friday, February 20, and then picked up a pair of wins on Saturday, 3-0, over Northwest Shoals, and 7-4 over No. 17 North Iowa Area.

The first game of the weekend was a pitcher's duel between the Lady Wolves and the Bears as the Bears scored first in the bottom of the fourth with a solo home run to take a 1-0 lead. That score held until the Wolves scored two runs in the top of the sixth as Stella Roberts (Raymond) hit a leadoff single to get the offense started. Later in the inning, Ayari Van Blaircom (Daphne, AL) smashed a full count pitch over the fence in left field for a go-ahead two-run home run, her team-leading fourth of the season, to give the Lady Wolves a 2-1 lead.

The Lady Wolves increased their lead with a solo run in the top of the seventh as Brooklyn Reine (Kentwood, LA) hit a one-out double and later scored on an RBI-double by Addison Lindley (Madison) making the score, 3-1. The Bears then got the leadoff batter on base in the bottom of the seventh, but then three straight groundouts secured the 3-1 victory for the Lady Wolves.

The Lady Wolves totaled four hits as Ayari VanBlaircom, Brooklyn Reine, Addison Lindley, and Stella Roberts had one hit each. VanBlaircom led the Lady Wolves in RBIs with two while Lindley had one.

Addison Lindley got the start and improved to 5-0 overall with the complete game effort allowing one run on one hit with three walks and one strikeout.

The Lady Wolves scored their first run of the game in the bottom of the second as Annie Poole (Brookhaven) hit a one-out single to get the offense started. Poole took second on a single by Emilie Williams (Summit) and then scored on an RBI-double by Stella Roberts making the score, 1-0.

The Patriots threatened to tie the game in the top of the third with back-to-back singles with two outs, but a groundout ended the inning and maintained the lead for the Lady Wolves. In the bottom of the fourth, the Patriots hit a one-out single, but a double play once again ended another inning while maintaining the 1-0 lead.

The Lady Wolves added their second run as Williams crushed an 0-1 pitch over the left field fence for a leadoff solo home run, her first of the season, increasing the lead to 2-0. The Patriots once again threatened to cut into the lead as an error, hit-by-pitch, and a sacrifice bunt put two runners in scoring position with one out; however, Ava Browder (Picayune) got back-to-back swinging strikeouts to end the scoring threat and maintain the Lady Wolves lead.

The final run of the game for the Lady Wolves came in the top of the seventh as Ayari VanBlaircom hit a one-out triple and scored on an error on the play making the lead, 3-0. The Patriots then went flyout, lineout, single, groundout in the bottom of the seventh to secure the victory for the Lady Wolves.

The Lady Wolves totaled six hits as a team with Emilie Williams leading the way with two hits while Ayari VanBlaircom, Addison Lindley, Annie Poole, and Stella Roberts had one hit each. Williams and Roberts had one RBI each.

Ava Browder got the start and improved to 4-1 overall with the complete game shutout allowing six hits with three strikeouts.

CO-LIN 7 NORTH IOWA AREA 4

The Trojans got on the board first as they scored two runs in the bottom of the first and took and early 2-0 lead. However, the Lady Wolves responded by cutting the lead in half with a single run in the top of the second as Stella Roberts hit a one-out single to get the offense started. Roberts advanced to second on a single by Morgan Chisolm (Madison) and then scored on an RBI-single by Katelynn Malone (Bogue Chitto) making the score, 2-1.

The Lady Wolves then took the lead with three runs in the top of the third as Emilie Williams drew a one-out walk to start the offense. Williams took second on a single by Annie Poole and then scored on an RBI-double by Roberts tying the game at 2-2. Poole then scored on an RBI-groundout by Chisolm while Roberts later scored on a passed ball giving the Lady Wolves a 4-2 lead.

The Lady Wolves added a single run in the top of the fifth as Poole hit a leadoff single while Landry Loper (Olive Branch) was brought in as a pinch runner. Loper advanced to third as Roberts reached on an error and then later scored on a passed ball increasing the lead to 5-2. The Lady Wolves added their final two runs in the top of the sixth as Brelie Phillips (Conehatta)  drew a one-out walk and advanced to second on a single by Ayari VanBlaircom. Both runners advanced on a sacrifice bunt by Olivia Higginbotham (Hernando) and then scored on a two-RBI triple by Williams making the score, 7-2.

The Trojans then went single, walk, single, single, hit-by-pitch to start the sixth inning and score two runs to cut the lead down to 7-4; however, Addison Lindley was then brought in for a relief appearance and struck out three straight batters to bring the rally to an end. The Trojans then went groundout, flyout, walk, strikeout in the seventh to secure the victory for the Lady Wolves.

The Lady Wolves totaled nine hits as a team with Annie Poole and Stella Roberts leading the way with two hits apiece while Brelie Phillips, Ayari VanBlaircom, Emilie Williams, Morgan Chisolm, and Katelynn Malone had one hit each. Williams led the Lady Wolves in RBIs with two while Roberts, Chisolm, and Malone had one RBI each.

Maddie West (Gonzales, LA) got the start and earned a no-decision while pitching 0.1 innings and allowing two earned runs on one hit with three walks. Lily Crum (Vidalia) got her first collegiate win (1-0) with 4.2 innings of relief allowing two earned runs on five hits with three walks and five strikeouts while Addison Lindley picked up her second save of the season with two scoreless and hitless innings of relief with one walk and four strikeouts.

Co-Lin is now 12-1 overall and will return to action on the road against Baton Rouge on Thursday, February 26. First pitch between the Lady Wolves and the Lady Bears is set for 1 p.m., at Hartley/Vey Park at Oak Villa in Baton Rouge.
