Lady Wolves Split Road Doubleheader with Baton Rouge

BATON ROUGE, La. – The Co-Lin Softball team took to the road to face off against Baton Rouge on Thursday, February 26. The Lady Wolves and Lady Bears split the doubleheader with the Lady Bears taking game one in extra innings, 9-8, while the Lady Wolves then earned a 12-2 victory in game two.

GAME ONE

The Lady Wolves dug a big hole to start the game as the Lady Bears scored four runs in the bottom of the first to take an early lead, 4-0. The Lady Bears then added a single run in the bottom of the second to extend the lead to 5-0.

The Lady Wolves started the comeback effort with a pair of runs in the top of the third as Brelie Phillips (Conehatta) crushed a 1-1 pitch over the fence in right field for a solo home run to cut the lead down to 5-1. Later in the inning, Annie Poole (Brookhaven) hit a two-out single and then scored on an RBI-double by Emilie Williams (Summit) making the score, 5-2.

The Lady Wolves cut the lead down to one run with a pair of runs in the top of the fourth as Brooklyn Reine (Kentwood, LA) hit a leadoff single to ge the offense going. Morgan Chisolm (Madison) then smashed a 2-1 pitch over the centerfield fence for a two-run home making the score, 5-4.

The Lady Bears then added two runs in the bottom of the fifth to extend their lead to 7-4. The Lady Wolves responded with three runs to tie the game in the top of the sixth as Reine hit a one-out single to get the offense started but was then forced out as Chisolm reached on a fielder's choice. After Landy Loper (Olive Branch) was brought in as a pinch runner, Stella Roberts (Raymond) hit an RBI-double scoring Loper to make the score, 7-5. Abby Burnette (Brookhaven) then hit a single while Olivia Higginbotham (Hernando) then drew pinch-hit walk while Bailey Parks (Smithdale) was brough in as a pinch runner to put two runners on with two outs. Parks and Higginbotham then scored on a two-RBI double by Phillips tying the game at 7-7.

The Lady Wolves then looked to take the lead in the top of the seventh as they loaded the bases with one out, but a fielder's choice followed by a groundout ended the inning with the game still tied. The Lady Bears then got a leadoff single, but a double play followed by a strikeout ended the inning and sent the game to extra innings.

The Lady Wolves took the lead with a solo run in the top of the eighth as Noelle Laiche (Gonzales, LA) hit a sacrifice bunt advance Burnette to third while Phillips then hit an RBI-single to score the run and give the Lady Wolves an 8-7 lead. The Lady Bears then hit an RBI-single to tie the game and later scored the winning run on a sacrifice fly to take the game 9-8.

The Lady Wolves totaled 11 hits as a team with Brelie Phillips leading the way with three hits while Emilie Williams and Brooklyn Reine had two hits apiece with Annie Poole, Morgan Chisolm, Stella Roberts, and Abby Burnette adding one hit each. Phillips led the Lady Wolves in RBIs with four while Chisolm had two with Williams and Roberts adding one each.

Ava Browder (Picayune) got the start and earned a no-decision with 0.1 innings pitched allowing four runs, all earned, on three hits with one walk. Lily Crum (Vidalia, LA) pitched 3.2 innings of relief allowing three runs, all earned, on eight hits with one walk and one strikeout. Maddie West (Gonzales, LA) pitched one inning of relief with two walks and one strikeout while Addison Lindley (Madison) took the loss (5-1) in relief with 2.1 innings allowing two runs, one earned, on four hits with one walk and two strikeouts.

GAME TWO

The Lady Wolves wasted no time in gaining the lead with four runs in the top of the first as Brelie Philliips and Ayari VanBlaircom hit back-to-back singles to start the game. Brooklyn Reine then hit a two-RBI triple scoring Phillips and VanBlaircom to give the Lady Wolves a 2-0 lead. After Emilie Wiliiams drew a walk and stole second, Annie Poole hit a two-RBI single scoring Reine and Williams and increasing the lead to 4-0.

The Lady Wolves added three runs in the top of the second as Noelle Laiche drew a leadoff walk to start the inning while Phillips then smashed a 2-1 pitch over the fence in centerfield for a two-run home run making the score, 6-0. VanBlaircom then reached on an error, stole second, and later scored on a sacrifice by Poole increasing the lead to 7-0.

The Lady Wolves added three runs in the top of the third as Morgan Chisolm hit a leadoff double while Stella Roberts ambushed the first pitch she saw and crushed it over the fence in left field making the score, 9-0. Laiche then drew a walk, stole second, and scored on an RBI-single by Reine increasing the lead to 10-0.

The Lady Bears then took advantage of an error by the Lady Wolves in the bottom of the fourth to score two runs and cut the lead down to 10-2. The Lady Wolves responded by getting the two runs back in the top of the fifth as Phillips drew a leadoff walk to get the offense started. Later in the inning, Reine drew a walk to put two runners on with one out. After a double steal, Phillips scored on a sacrifice fly by Williams while an RBI-double by Mady McCrory (Purvis) plated Reine making the lead, 12-2. The Lady Bears then went single, groundout, walk, fielder's choice, groundout in the top of the fifth to secure the game two victory and split of the day for the Lady Wolves.

The Lady Wolves totaled nine hits as a team as Brelie Phillips and Brooklyn Reine had two hits apiece while Ayari VanBlaircom, Annie Poole, Mady McCrory, Morgan Chisolm, and Stella Roberts had one hit each. Reine and Poole led the Lady Wolves in RBIs with three apiece while Phillips and Roberts had two each with Williams and McCrory adding one RBI each.

Addison Lindley got the start and improved to 6-1 overall with two innings pitched allowing no runs on one hit with two walks and one strikeout while Ava Browder pitched two innings allowing two unearned runs on four hits. Mady McCrory made her first appearance of the season with one inning of scoreless relief allowing one hit with one walk.

Co-Lin is now 13-2 overall and will return to action hosting Chipola on Saturday, February 28. First pitch between the Lady Indians and the Lady Wolves is set for 1 p.m., in Wesson.
