Lady Wolves Sweep Lady Eagles to Stay Undefeated in Conference Play
RAYMOND – The Co-Lin Softball team hit the road for a Top 15 matchup against Hinds on Wednesday, March 18. The No. 3 Lady Wolves swept the No. 15 Lady Eagles taking game one, 10-2, and game two, 9-4.
GAME ONE
The Lady Wolves grabbed the lead early as they scored five runs in the top of the first as Brelie Phillips (Conehatta) and Ayari VanBlaircom (Daphne, AL) drew back-to-back walks to start the game. Later in the inning, Emilie Williams (Summit) drew a walk to load the bases with one out while Phillips then scored as Brooklyn Reine (Kentwood, LA) reached on an error to give the Lady Wolves a 1-0 lead. Morgan Chisolm (Madison) then hit a two-RBI single scoring VanBlaircom and Williams while Reine later scored on an error after a double steal by the Lady Wolves. Later in the inning, Chisolm scored the final run of the inning on an RBI-single by Abby Burnette (Brookhaven) making the score, 5-0.
The Lady Wolves then added a single run in the top of the second as Phillips hit a leadoff double and later scored increasing the lead to 6-0. The Lady Eagles scored their two runs of the game in the bottom of the third cutting the lead down to 6-2.
The Lady Wolves then scored three runs in the top of the fifth as Chisolm drew a leadoff walk to get the offense started. Later in the inning, Burnette singled while Noelle Laiche (Gonzales, LA) reached on an error to load the bases with one out while Landry Loper (Olive Branch) was brought in as a pinch runner for Chisolm. Later in the inning Loper scored as Phillips drew a walk. Burnette then stole third and later swiped home on a double steal attempt by the Lady Wolves increasing the lead to 8-2. Phillips then scored on an RBI-double by VanBlaircom making the lead, 9-2.
The Lady Wolves scored their final run in the top of the sixth as Williams crushed a 3-1 pitch over the fence in left field for a leadoff solo home run making the score, 10-2. The Lady Eagles were then retired in order to secure the victory for the Lady Wolves.
The Lady Wolves totaled ten hits with Emilie Williams and Abby Burnette leading the way with two hits apiece while Brelie Phillips, Ayari VanBlaircom, Annie Poole, and Morgan Chisolm had one hit each. VanBlaircom and Chisolm led the Lady Wolves in RBIs with two while Williams and Burnette had one RBI each.
Addison Lindley (Madison) got the start and improved to 12-1 overall with the complete game win allowing two earned runs on four hits with three walks and two strikeouts.
GAME TWO
The Lady Eagles got on the board first with a single run in the bottom of the first to take and early 1-0 lead.
That lead held until the Lady Wolves scored four runs in the top of the third as Noelle Laiche and Brelie Phillips hit back-to-back singles to put two runners on with one out. Ayari VanBlaircom then blasted a 1-2 pitch over the fence in left field for a three-run home run. The Lady Wolves then went back-to-back home runs as Annie Poole (Brookhaven) crushed a 3-2 pitch over the centerfield fence for a solo home run giving the Lady Wolves a 4-1 lead.
The Lady Wolves added one run in the top of the fourth as Abby Burnette and Laiche hit back-to-back singles to start the inning. Later in the inning, Burnette scored on an RBI-single by VanBlaircom increasing the lead to 5-1. The Lady Eagles then scored two runs in the bottom of the fourth and one in the bottom of the fifth to cut the lead down to 5-4.
The Lady Wolves added one run in the top of the sixth as Laiche drew a walk and Phillips singled to put two runners on with one out. Laiche then scored on a sacrifice fly by VanBlaircom making the lead, 6-4.
The Lady Wolves then added three runs in the top of the seventh as Emilie Williams hit a leadoff single. Williams then stole second and took third on a passed ball, but was out at home as Olivia Higginbotham (Hernando) reached on a fielder's choice. Later in the inning, Katelynn Malone (Bogue Chitto) ambushed the first pitch of her at-bat and crushed it over the fence in left field for a two-run home run increasing the lead to 8-4. Burnette then followed with a single and Landry Loper was brought in as a pinch runner. Loper then stole second and scored on an RBI double by Laiche pushing the lead to 9-4.
The Lady Wolves totaled 12 hits as Noelle Laiche led the way going 3-for-3 while Brelie Phillips, Ayari VanBlaircom, and Abby Burnette had two hits apiece with Annie Poole, Emilie Williams, and Katelynn Malone adding one hit each. VanBlaircom led the Lady Wolves in RBIs with five while Malone had two with Poole and Laiche adding one RBI each.
Ava Browder (Picayune) got the start and improved to 11-1 with the win while pitching four innings and allowing four runs, all earned, on ten hits with one walk and two strikeouts. Lily Crum (Vidalia, LA) got her second save of the season pitching three innings of scoreless and hitless relief with one walk.
Co-Lin improves to 27-2 overall, 8-0 in MACCC play, and will return to action hosting East Central on Tuesday, March 24. First pitch between the Lady Warriors and the Lady Wolves is set for 3 p.m., at Lady Wolves Field in Wesson.
