Lady Wolves Drop Close Game Against Wildcats
POPLARVILLE – The Co-Lin Women's Basketball team hit the road to face off against MACCC foe Pearl River on Monday, February 9. The Lady Wolves mounted a second-half comeback against the Wildcats, but came up just short with a 49-46 loss.
The teams traded baskets and leads over the opening minutes of the first quarter, but the Wildcats held the lead at 6-5 with 5:20 left to play. The Wildcats then outscored the Lady Wolves, 4-2, to push their lead to 10-7 at the end of play.
The Lady Wolves opened the second quarter with a quick 4-0 scoring run to take an 11-10 lead over the Wildcats with 8:07 left on the clock. However, the Wildcats responded with a 9-4 scoring run to regain the lead at 19-15 with three minutes remaining. The Wildcats then closed out the first half with a 5-2 scoring run to push their lead to 24-17 as the teams entered the locker rooms at halftime.
The Lady Wolves opened the second half and third quarter with a 5-4 scoring run cutting the Wildcats lead down to 28-22 with 5:45 remaining. The Lady Wolves then went on a 6-2 scoring run to cut the lead down 30-28 with 1:30 left to play. However, the Wildcats responded by closing out the quarter on a 5-2 scoring run and pushing their lead to 35-30 heading to the final quarter of play.
Both teams opened the fourth quarter matching scoring totals with five points each as the Wildcats lead stood at 40-35 with 6:17 left on the clock. The Lady Wolves responded with a 9-7 scoring run to cut the lead down to 47-44 with 1:07 remaining in the game. The Wildcats then used a pair of free throws to push their lead to 49-44 while the Lady Wolves cut the lead back to 49-46 with 10 seconds left after a made field goal by Kamaiyah Pruitt (Pass Christian). The Wildcats then missed two free throws while the Lady Wolves were able to get one last shot off to attempt to tie the game, but the shot was no good as the Wildcats held on to take the game, 49-46.
Kamaiyah Pruitt led the way for the Lady Wolves as she had 11 points with eight rebounds with three steals, one assist, and one block while Akeelah Hobson (Oakdale, LA) had eight points with six rebounds and three assists. Eymani Key (Lafayette, LA) and Maddison Mitchell (Baton Rouge, LA) had six points each while Zion Nelson (Byram) had five points. Tyra Johnson (Morton) had four points with Jalynn Applewhite (Gulfport) and Amari Barnes (Tylertown) adding three points each to round out the scoring for the Lady Wolves.
Co-Lin is now 12-6 overall, 4-3 in MACCC play and will return to action hosting Meridian on Thursday, February 12. Tip-off between the Lady Eagles and the Lady Wolves is set for 5:30 p.m., in Mullen Gym.
