Lady Wolves Stumble Late Against Lady Eagles

WESSON – The Co-Lin Women's Basketball team hosted Meridian in MACCC action on Thursday, February 12. The Lady Wolves could not hold off a late comeback effort by the Lady Eagles, as they came away with a 68-65 win.

The Lady Wolves came out firing on all cylinders early offensively as they opened the game with a 9-5 scoring run to hold a lead by that margin with 7:25 left to play. Both teams then cooled off as the Lady Wolves went on a 3-2 scoring run pushing their lead to 12-7 with 3:36 remaining in the first quarter. The Lady Eagles then closed out the quarter with a 9-2 scoring run to hold a 16-14 lead at the end of play.

The Lady Wolves then came out and opened the second quarter with an 8-0 run to take a 22-16 lead with 7:46 left on the clock. The Lady Wolves continued their dominant play in the quarter as they went on a 6-2 scoring run to push their lead to 28-18 with 1:47 left in the first half. The Lady Eagles closed out the quarter with a 4-2 scoring run cutting the Lady Wolves lead down to 30-22 as the teams hit the locker rooms for halftime.

Once again, both teams were hot offensively to start the third quarter as the Lady Eagles went on an 11-8 scoring run, but the Lady Wolves held a 40-33 with 6:23 remaining. The Lady Eagles then went on an 11-7 scoring run cutting the Lady Wolves lead down to 47-44 with 2:18 left to play. The Lady Eagles closed out the quarter with a 6-5 scoring run, but the Lady Wolves held a 52-50 lead at the end of play heading to the final quarter.

The Lady Eagles carried their momentum across to the fourth quarter as they opened with a 6-4 scoring run to tie the game at 56-56 with 7:04 left. The Lady Eagles then went on an 8-3 scoring run to take a 64-59 lead over the Lady Wolves with 2:06 remaining in the game. The Lady Wolves closed out the game with a 6-4 scoring run, but could not get a tying bucket at the end as the Lady Eagles held on for the 68-65 win.

Akeelah Hobson (Oakdale, LA) led the way for the Lady Wolves as she had 19 points with three assists and one steal while Kamaiyah Pruitt (Pass Christian) had 16 points with six rebounds and four assists. Zion Nelson (Byram) narrowly missed a double-double performance with 15 points and eight rebounds with one assist and one steal.

Amari Barnes (Tylertown) and Eymani Key (Lafayette, LA) had six points each with Tyra Johnson adding two points and Maddison Mitchell (Baton Rouge, LA) had one point to round out the scoring for the Lady Wolves.

Co-Lin is now 12-7 overall, 4-4 in MACCC play, and will return to action on the road at Jones on Monday, February 16. Tip-off between the Lady Wolves and Bobcats is set for 5:30 p.m. at A.B.Howard Gymnasium in Ellisville.
