Lady Wolves Outlast Lady Bears

WESSON – The Co-Lin Women's Basketball team returned to MACCC play hosting rival Southwest on Thursday, February 19. It was a tale of two halves for the Lady Wolves as they used a second half surge to overcome a sluggish first half and beat the Bears, 51-38.

The Lady Wolves jumped ahead early in the first quarter as they went on a 7-2 scoring run to hold a lead by that margin with 6:35 left to play. However, the Lady Wolves then went cold offensively as the Lady Bears scored seven unanswered points to hold a 9-7 lead at the end of play.

The Lady Bears then went on a quick 5-2 scoring run to open the second quarter and push their lead to 14-9 with 7:58 left. The Lady Wolves responded by closing out the quarter with a 6-4 scoring run, but the Lady Bears held the lead at 18-15 as the teams entered the locker rooms at halftime.

The Lady Wolves opened the second half and third quarter with an 8-2 scoring run to take a 23-20 lead over the Lady Bears with 6:59 remaining. However, the Lady Bears responded with a 6-4 scoring run cutting the Lady Wolves lead down to one points, 27-26, with 1:46 left to play. The Lady Wolves closed the quarter by outscoring the Lady Bears, 3-1, to hold a 29-28 lead heading to the final quarter of play.

The Lady Wolves opened the fourth quarter with a 9-4 scoring run to push their lead to 38-32 with 7:55 left on the clock. The Lady Wolves continued their offensive surge as they went on another 9-4 scoring run increasing their lead to 47-36 with 3:23 remaining. The Lady Wolves then closed out the game with a 4-2 scoring run to secure the 51-38 victory over the Lady Bears.

Kamaiyah Pruitt (Pass Christian) led the way for the Lady Wolves as she led all players in points and rebounds with 21 and nine respectively. Maddison Mitchell (Baton Rouge, LA) had eight points with six rebounds, five assists, and four steals while Akeelah Hobson (Oakdale) had six. Zion Nelson (Byram), Jalynn Applewhite (Gulfport), and Eymani Key (Lafayette, LA) had four points each while Tyra Johnson (Morton) and Jamyria Robinson (St. Martin) had two points each to round out the scoring for the Lady Wolves.

Co-Lin improves to 13-8 overall, 5-5 in MACCC play, and will return to action hosting Northwest on Saturday, February 21. Tip-off between the Rangers and the Lady Wolves is set for 1 p.m., at Mullen Gym in Wesson.
