Lady Wolves Dominate Lady Stars

WESSON – The Co-Lin Women's Basketball team continued non-conference play by hosting South Arkansas on Thursday, November 13. The Lady Wolves dominated the matchup with the Lady Stars with an 89-44 victory.

"This was a great team win," stated Co-Lin head coach Dr. Britta Stephens Belanger. "I am really proud of how balanced our scoring effort was and how well we shared the ball."

The Lady Wolves opened the game with 16 unanswered points and held the lead at 16-0 with 6:53 left in the first quarter. The Lady Wolves then used a 9-5 scoring run to push their lead to 25-5 with 2:23 remaining. The Lady Stars then scored the final three points of the quarter as the Lady wolves lead stood at 25-8 at the end of play.

The Lady Wolves used a 9-7 scoring run to open the second quarter and push their lead to 34-15 with 6:05 left on the clock. The Lady Wolves then used a 6-0 run to push their lead to 40-15 with 2:21 left to play in the first half. A 7-0 run by the Lady Wolves closed out the quarter and pushed their lead to 47-15 as the teams entered the locker rooms at halftime.

In the third quarter, the Lady Wolves held the Lady Stars to their third straight single digit scoring quarter and outscored them 15-9 as they pushed their lead to 62-24. In the fourth quarter, both teams had their largest scores of the game as they Lady Wolves outscored the Lady Stars, 27-20, to secure the 89-44 victory.

The Lady Wolves had five players hit double-digit scoring figures as Zion Nelson (Byram) narrowly missed a double-double as she led all scorers with 17 points and nine rebounds. The Lady Wolves had three players with double-double performances as Jalynn Applewhite (Gulfport) led the trio with 11 points and 11 rebounds while Kamaiyah Pruitt (Pass Christian) had 11 points and 10 rebounds with Tyra Johnson (Morton) adding 10 points and 10 rebounds. Emani Key (Lafayette, LA) had 12 points with three assists and five steals.

"Three players with a double-double is almost unheard of. Zion Nelson had a great second half performance that led to hers while Tyra Johnson had a great performance and her game is improving every time she plays" added Stephens Belanger. "Maddi Mitchell did a great job of leading our team and running the show for us."

Akeelah Hobson (Oakdale, LA) had nine points, Amari Barnes (Tylertown) had five points, and Maddison Mitchell (Baton Rouge, LA) had four points to round out the scoring for the Lady Wolves.

Co-Lin improves to 4-1 overall and will return to action with a neutral site game against LSU-Eunice on Monday, November 17. Tip-off between the Lady Bengals and the Lady Wolves is set for 1 p.m., at Southwest Mississippi Community College in Summit.
